It's amazing that left leaning morons would try to make this about race, how much more pathetic can you guys get?
First--I'm not a liberal. Second, if you don't think you need to arm yourself against the government, then good for you. Why are you identifying with those people and feel threatened by this conversation? Just about everyone here has said that they prepare for storms, and I'll be the first to admit that we have a gun case in our home, although my personal opinion is that a good old fashioned 12 gauge shotgun is going to be a lot more effective for dealing with a burgler than an assault rifle. The people folks ridicule are the ones who are so convinced that communist/socialist/terrorist/Kenyan Obama is going to come after them that they stock pile weapons and a years worth of food so they can survive a standoff with the feds--there's plenty who feel that way on this board, and it absolutely IS a racial thing--that and being bat poop crazy.

What about the people who are doing that now and have been doing that long before Obama was even a senator? Did they all of become racist who hate black people when Obama was elected or do they get grandfathered in as just someone who likes to be prepared?

We used to live in the Ozarks, and there was a huge "Christian identity" movement--this goes back to the 70s and 80s--who were involved in survivalist stuff there--they were white supremacists who had camps out in the woods. They believed that the economy would collapse and black people from the city would raid their farms looking for food. The illuminati, or the Jewish Banking System, or the United Nations and black helicopters were usually involved back then too. It's all the same story, except now they REALLY think the world has fallen apart with a black president. It completely freaks them out.

Maybe you missed my question and wanted to just throw that out there, which is cool... now go back and actually answer my question.

Maybe you can't read? I did answer your question. The survivalist movement has for the most part been part of, or at least linked to, the white supremicist movement since it began. They've always been paranoid about the Jews or black people coming after them. It's just gotten worse since Obama was elected. Those are the people who face ridicule. If you stockpile for a hurricane, no one cares, and no one has ever made fun of you for that. Maybe you've been laughed at for stockpiling guns (I don't know or care) but not for common sense preparations like food and water for a storm. Got it now?

You linked to a biased "report" from a left wing, progressive website which basically does nothing but look for ways to make anything conservative evil... that sounds like what you're doing actually.

Your attempt to link people who prep for things like political unrest with racism is ridiculous but I've come to expect that sort of thing from my less intelligent liberal friends. I'm sure the black and white folks who had their self defense guns confiscated by the government after hurricane Katrina would love to talk to you about your beliefs on this subject and how you feel it could never happen.

Those who stock guns to fight off "home intruders" should realize how rare that event actually is. But they'll do it anyway, since stats don't seem to mean much to those who do it.

See the movie "Blast From the Past." It covers all of this territory.

Why don't you tell us just how rare is it? Is it more or less rare than "never" because that's my litmus test. If it happens more often than never I weigh my options and plan accordingly.

Oh good grief. Usually people question opinion pieces that come from more biased sources, but not hard news and research. Usually they know the difference.

Here's fox news:
Missouri White Supremacist Convicted on Weapons Charges | Fox News
And another:
White supremacists accused of planning for 'race war' in Florida - U.S. News

I can dig up more, but it's not worth my time. I was very careful to not include research piece from anti hate groups like CHURCHES because, heaven forbid, they might not be neutral enough for you, even if they aren't opinion pieces.

I think some people in the survivalist movement are white supremacists, and some are people who buy into the "the government is going to come for me and I have to fight back" stuff that white supremacists teach, but they're not actively part of that movement. The common factor seems to be fear and paranoia that these "others" are out to get them, without any rational cause for the fear.

Why do you automatically assume that the "others" that people prepared to defend against are of a certain skin color? Why do you automatically go to the race card? Is it just the easy thing to do?
