NEW YORK - Harry Potter fans, the rumors are true: Albus Dumbledore, master wizard and Headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay. J.K. Rowling, author of the mega-selling fantasy series that ended last summer, outed the beloved character Friday night while appearing before a full house at Carnegie Hall.
After reading briefly from the final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," she took questions from audience members.
1) She was asked by one young fan whether Dumbledore finds "true love."
"Dumbledore is gay," the author responded to gasps and applause.
Stating that he's gay, doesnt really answer the question does it?
2) Why she still doing tours and why is the fact that he's gay important? My speculation is that there is another book in the works..
No, she also says that Grindiwald was his great love... the gay comment would kind of have to precede that. I haven't seen footage of the interview so it would be interesting to see how it went. Most reporters probably could care less about grindiesomtheing
Ooh. The hardcore, book-banning Christians are going to love this!
That's exactly what JK said in her article. The ultra-Christian groups have been very critical with the HP books because of the witchcraft, etc. but now that there is a gay character to add to the list, their complaints are never going to stop.
I admit I was a bit shocked but I also don't see the relevance of Dumbledore being gay. It's not like JK focused on demonstrating Dumbledore's sexual preferences in her books. It just seems like an odd time for her to bring this out.
Nothing against gay people, but stupid is the only thing that comes to mind here. There was no reason to make him gay, none at all. I think she just wants some controversy.
I agree with you pgh...maybe she is all ready working toward another book....she could do a life and times of Dumbledore thing....a history before Harry. It would allow her to use the Potter series as a springboard, yet do something different. hmmmm.....
