Based on the story pointing out that as in many urban areas that have a police departments that bear the greatest burden of law enforcement and a limited jurisdiction elected sheriff, this seems to me to be more about political pissing match between the two the gun issue is just the smoke and mirror.
It already has expanded to more cities. The Sherrif in Columbia county advised residents to "move" since all his deputies have been laid off. IMO that is a more responsible position to take than to advise residents to arm themselves. Sheriff Clarke has to know that a lot of black men are going to be shot pre-emptively, like a "prowler" who was shot by an off duty law enforcement type in my area. When it starts to become clear just how useless guns are as defensive weapons the offensive use of them by otherwise law abiding citizens will explode. Like it has in those areas that have enacted "Stand Your Ground" type legislation. When seconds count, no one will think about what they are doing before killing someone, and if it later turns out that they were wrong... ... oops.... but he acted suspicious!!
You're right ovcatto. Clarke has had run-ins w/a few people in Milwaukee. He's overly aggressive & immature. Not to mention that he outright lied & ran as a democrat when he clearly is not. He's good at spouting controversial things simply to get a reaction.

Well, maybe he'll get the operation and become one. You know the one...where they take out half your brain and all your integrity?
The police are there to file a report and assess blame after the fact. They cannot protect anyone.
True, and they are not legally required to protect anyone. Expecting the police to provide individual protection and security is just naive.
