Chicago has one of the strictest gun laws in the United States. They're a good example of how pointless gun control really is...

Exactly. If they start taking guns away from the people all they're really doing is manifesting an incentive for others to create a black market. That's just adding more fuel to this perpetual fire.

It's not about the guns. It's about the mentality of the people and how little concern they have for their fellow Americans. The guns are just the tool to carry out the intent. The "intent" is no longer to just beat up people; it's to kill them now. That is what should worry city officials.

Chicago's problem is that guns can easily be brought in from surrounding cities with laxer gun laws... so federal laws would help.

Chicago gun laws:
"Some municipalities, most notably Chicago, require that all firearms be registered with the local police department.[22] Chicago residents must "immediately" report a firearm that is stolen or lost, and must report the transfer of a firearm at least 48 hours in advance.[23] Chicago also prohibits the sale of firearms within city limits.[24] Chicago has banned the possession of certain semi-automatic firearms that it defines as assault weapons, as well as magazines that can hold more than 12 rounds of ammunition.[25] Separately, Cook County has banned assault weapons and magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds.[26][27] Other municipalities have also enacted various firearm restrictions.[28]"

Here is LaPierre missing the point completely:

Nothing will change...

Here's a 1992 article and reads like it was printed up this morning.
How Criminals Get Guns: In Short, All Too Easily - New York Times
In one sad neighborhood here, where funerals for young men and boys are now commonplace, people say the "Gun Man" drives through the streets, selling pistols from the back of a light-blue van.

Not far away in a violent patch of Chicago's South Side, Federal agents arrested a different man, a licensed gun dealer, on charges of selling weapons illegally to undercover officers in dark alleys and crumbling garages. Before he was caught, the authorities say, he sold hundreds of firearms to gang members and anyone else with fistfuls of dollars.
..
Today, an 8-year-old boy took a .380-caliber semiautomatic Llama pistol to school in his book bag and shot a third-grade classmate in the back. He later told the police he had brought the gun from home and did not mean to shoot the girl, who was reported in serious condition.

It is about mentality, and it's also about drugs. It was worse in the 1980s because of the cocaine coming up from Florida. Gangs shot and killed one another over drug turf. Why? It was about the money. Whenever people put money and materials first over people, then things get crazy. And it wasn't just Chicago that got hit. Milwaukee, located in a state that forbid carrying concealed weapons, saw a rise in murders during the 1980s, mainly because gangs from Chicago were going up there(Milwaukee is 90 minutes up the Interstate from Chicago), and in 1995, Minneapolis became "Murderapolis". Cities like Miami, Houston, Atlanta, and a few others were seeing murder rates go up.

Now another question is this. Where does the mentality come from?

Puerto Rico has stricter gun laws than Illinois and Chicago. The 2010 murder rate for my hometown stood at ~67. That's higher than anywhere else in the US, only certain cities in northern Mexico have a comparable murder rate. Gun prohibition does not work

There is also another thing many people do not consider. Puerto Rico sits on a major drug trading route in the Caribbean. Part of the same reason why Colombia, Venezuela, Jamaica, and Honduras have such high murder rates.
