All income is taxed. Do you have some reason to believe that people working under the table are the only people sending money?

I didn't know what was going on the first time I saw the line and asked the cashier about it.

Whether it's taxed or not, it is money leaving the US system. It's money not spent in the US.
How much ? $2.5 billion as of 5/2012 averaging $350/week is what goes to Mexico alone.

People come here to earn a living but don't spend here except for the basic necessities.
