A "state's" crime rate? I want to know the crime rate of the area I'm thinking of living in and it's surrounding areas.

I live in NJ. I would assume at the state level crime is quite low due to the large number of middle class to affluent areas. That said, no way in hell would I live in or near Newark, Irvington, Camden, Orange, Patterson.......

I would think MI would be similar. Lots of nice, safe suburbs and then you have the likes of Detroit.

Don't think anyone in their mid 60's is thinking low life expectancy - esp. when a majority of them
are not under the age of 2

Oh baby, taxes are everything when you are over 60

You can't go by a State's crime statistics either.

Take Illinois for example. It's going to have a higher crime rate because of Chicago than, say.... Idaho. But that doesn't mean that the rest of Illinois isn't great and very low crime. One big, nasty city can skew the statistics all over the place.

Yeah that is probably the dumbest criteria ever. The criteria they use are the last things I would look in a retirement destination. I have a friend who just retired from WA state to NM and loves it there. And anyway NM voted 53-43 for Obama over Romney so it is hardly a red state.

I can see where blue states might tend to fare better than expected for retirement though. They tend to have very high unemployment, which would be of no matter to a retiree. It could even make it easier to hire a maid, landscaper, etc.

The more you display your ignorance of Texas, the more I love living here

When you spew hatred (as you tend to do alot on here) people tend to ignore you

You are a great sales person for the state though

I'm surprised California isn't on the list.

I think that the higher crime rates in many southern states reflect the fact that all crime is reported.
When I've read crime reports from some of these states I've seen crimes such as objects being stolen from unlocked cars.
In NY if you leave your car unlocked anything taken is you own falt and probably not reported. I've also had numerous car windows broken but didn't report them. I didn't want to wait the hour or two for the police to come to make a report.
Most of these low priority crimes go unreported in Ny but not in other states.

The list and their reasoning is all BS. Some of these states were on CNN's Best States to Retire last year.

Articles like this are a waste of time without the full information they used. Articles like this are for one thing. To get clicks.

Odds are high they are using percentage under poverty based only upon income. Yes, maybe with rates low a person is only getting $12,000 in interest and S.S. or what have you but they might have $250,000 in the bank.
