Disability benefits are most certainly abused. I would surmise that disability is abused in much higher numbers than AFDC or other types of aid.

It's despicable and should be prosecuted when discovered-- The problem is it's ethereal and difficult to prove.

Only you know whether or not you are truly in pain.

On top of that, I have never met anyone retired from the military that wasn't drawing some disability from the government as well.

SSDI is not a handout. In order to collect SSDI, you need to have worked for a number of years paying into the system to qualify. 10+ years. The amount you get goes by what you paid in, usually $1500 a month. Not enough to live on. Please do some research before you go around spreading hate speech against people with real disabilities.

I'm sure it also has nothing to do with a bunch of aging-but-not-old-enough-for-SSI boomers deciding they'd rather take an easy retirement than work anymore.

The share of disabled worker benefits awarded to older workers (age 45 and older) has risen while the share going to younger workers, those between the ages of 25 to 44 has fallen.

To be eligible for disability, a person must prove he or she is unable to work due to a medical condition that will last at least a year. Thousands get denied claims each week.

I will let my neighbor who has had MS for the last 14 years know that folks like you feel that she is a moocher.
Don't forget to tell her that you used her as a political prop in a wholly irrelevant strawman post in a political discussion. She's sure to love you even more for that!

This issue keeps popping up .

Here is what I wrote a few weeks back:

//www.city-data.com/forum/polit...l#post27865944

Our office is certainly not paying more than we did a decade ago (percentage wise). Of course, when I started in 1988 there were a total of 3 judges (and three attorneys, including me). Now we have ten of each, due to the caseload (again, mainly Baby Boomers).

Virtually all of our judges are veterans are not considered 'liberal' by any means.

What kind of special thought process does it take to think that SSDI is something only liberals take advantage of or support? I guarantee there are at least one or two bloated conservative keyboard warriors on this board right now who are taking advantage of SSDI, unemployment, foodstamps, Medicare....whilst decrying socialism.

Newsflash: Keeping safety net programs solvent and healthy is a liberal position. Overloading the programs is not, neither is eliminating them entirely because there are cases of fraud or abuse.
