People who buy guns from dealers all go through background checks.
Getting the current type of background check on someone doesn't guarantee that that person is not a criminal, mentally ill, or an illegal immigrant. It never has.

There's no guarantee. Even the most stringent background check can't have 100% guarantee. Look up Robert Hanssen if you will.
If you have better idea to improve the background check, we are all ears.

The biggest problem I see is that people with mental illness with violent tendencies appear to fall through the cracks of the system, as several recent incidents demonstrate. There needs to be a better way to ensure that people with these issues get into the system so that they are aren't allow to obtain a gun when a background check is done on them.

NRA has been begging every part of the government to do this for years!!!
Here's another thing we all have been begging: put those, who are denied to purchase a firearm after a background check, in prison!!!

I'm glad that you understand what a waste it would be to extend "background checks" to all gun sales then.
Now, in addition to the NICS background check, when you purchase a firearm you fill out a federal document stating that you are not mentally ill (specifically adjudicated mentally incompetant), a felon, an illegal immigrant or a user of illegal drugs. You also state that you are buying the firearm for your own use and not for a person prohibited from owning a firearm. Lying on this document is a federal felony, punishable by a federal prison sentence of (I believe) 10 years.

Ironically, it is often the very same people that want tougher "gun control laws" and more infringements on the rights of law abiding citizens that oppose these things. Adding the "mentally ill" to the database infringes on their rights. Locking up criminals for a meaningful length of time is cruel. Imprisoning the wifes/girlfriends that committed a felony by purchasing a firearm for a convicted felon is heartless.
But punishing innocent, law abiding people...is someohow OK??? In what universe?
HOnestly though, it is no suprise. The goal of gun control proponents has never been "safety" or to reduce crime. It is all about control, and to an extent a way of assuaging their irrational fear of inanimate objects.

It is a federal crime, however, of the 80,000 denials last year, only 44 were prosecuted.
I'm sure the background checks will help, although here in MI we already have that procedure in place.
As far as the majority of guns being from straw purchases, I don't know if I completely buy that one. The last 4 or 5 shootings that have happened here in Detroit where by 15 and 16 high school kids. Kids with no jobs, so I guess I just don't see someone that has the ability to purchase firearms, buying them and then just giving them or selling them for peanuts to these kids. They are in it for profit. Here in the D I'm thinking the majority of firearms on the streets are from theft.
I propose that we establish a national criminal, mentally ill and illegal aliens database available to everybody for free.
That way, lawful gun owners can easily look up the database to conduct background check. :-)
