Time is money. In terms of man-hours, combined, the sheep could've easily overwhelmed the influence of the corporate fat cats that pretended the economy is in danger to convince the President and Congress to give them a stimulus so that they could put it in their own pockets.

If they so choose to, the common citizen could easily overpower the media's influence on them and easily over power the will of the powerful. They could easily demand the patriot act repealed and the stimulus paid back.

...But they don't. Because it's easy to stay asleep, watch cable news, and maybe mutter some comments about the president on an internet. Because you can do all that at home and vote every couple of years based on what candidate looks friendly and knowledgeable on tv.

That's a lot easier than actually researching the voting records, having a serious political discussion with your friends and family armed with facts and figures, going to local town meetings, writing to your senator, writing articles for your local newspaper alerting others of the atrocities of the current politicians, and helping with the campaign.

There are a lot of ignorant voters out there and everyone needs to take the time to wake them up, or otherwise you will let politicians get away with lying and the like.

inertia, working people are unlikely to risk it all for an uncertain future; at least with the status quo we get a roof over our heads, food in our bellies, and all the entrainment we desire.

Which is why revolutions occur when people are either oppressed or hungry.
