"Strict gun control" means, of course, 100% confiscation of all privately-owned firearms. Nothing less will work.
Criminals will always be able to get them, by stealing them, unless they are all GONE.
As long as the are CNC machines, guns will be manufactured, even if you shut down the manufacturers, these machines will still produce black market guns. Just like meth labs produce backyard drugs.
As long as there is a Mexican cartel, there will be guns in criminal hands.
It would be impossible to collect up all the illegal gun in America anyhow.

I didn't say having a gun offers no advantage in any scenario ever. There are plenty of scenarios where it does confer an advantage, either acting as a deterrent or allowing one to defend oneself.
There are also cases where having a gun strapped to your hip doesn't offer any advantage, like when someone starts shooting at your car while you're driving it. It doesn't act as a deterrent because he can't see your gun. Pulling your gun out and attempting to shoot while driving or attempting to stop and then engage in a shootout puts you at greater risk than just driving away. Having a gun in that scenario is at best of no advantage, and at worst you get yourself killed because you'd rather engage than remove yourself from the threat.

The truth is that manufacturing quality small arms isn’t all that hard to do anymore. Detailed plans that are ready to upload to your CNC milling machine are freely available online, and that reverse-engineering is something that manufacturers have been doing since the advent of manufacturing.
Actually, I have nothing but praise to offer the emergency responders, including the FBI and ATF. Without exception, they were all very polite and professional and not heavy handed at all.
