Not true. Minimum wage WAS meant to be a living wage:

Quote:
An excerpt from Franklin Roosevelt's Statement on the National Industrial Recovery Act (wage and labor law)
June 16, 1933

In my Inaugural I laid down the simple proposition that nobody is going to starve in this country. It seems to me to be equally plain that no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country. By "business" I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level-I mean the wages of decent living.
Why does the myth of minimum wage NOT being a living wage persist?

Another interesting quote of Roosevelt's, which is extremely relevant today:

Quote:
“Do not let any calamity-howling executive with an income of $1,000 a day, who has been turning his employees over to the Government relief rolls in order to preserve his company’s undistributed reserves, tell you – using his stockholders’ money to pay the postage for his personal opinions — tell you that a wage of $11.00 a week is going to have a disastrous effect on all American industry.” (1938, Fireside Chat, the night before signing the Fair Labor Standards Act that instituted the federal minimum wage)
No one knows history, or even cares. They are told that by politicians, and are too lazy to find out for themselves.
If you are 25+ and making minimum wage you need to look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself one simple question, "Why am I a dumbass?"
More than 3.5 million Americans work at or below the minimum wage, up more than 50 percent from a decade ago, and government data show that the numbers of minimum wage workers have swollen even among those with college and advanced degrees.
Twice as Many College Grads in Minimum Wage Jobs as 5 Years Ago | US News

Where do these morons get the notion that minimum wage is meant to be a living wage? It is an ENTRY level wage, it's not something meant to support your family on.

Minimum wage is for low to no skilled workers, nothing more nothing less. This is just another tactic designed to increase the costs incurred by business owners and will result on a net loss of jobs if this jackass gets his way.
And what happens when the higher-paying skilled labor blue collar jobs that used to exist all go the way of the dinosaur because of outsourcing and automation and entry level jobs "not meant to be livable" is all that is left for large segments of people? Have you thought about that yet?

Not everyone is cut out to be the next surgeon or software engineer; in fact, most aren't.

All the while we are letting in illegal labor by the millions to replace workers at what used to be solid jobs like construction.

Only 1% can be in the top 1%. The same goes for the bottom 1%. The question is how are we going to treat the bottom 1%?

Those two statements are not in conflict, and even if they were, it wouldn't exactly further your point.

The initial quote is FDR saying that a minimum wage should be at least enough to live on. The next is that you should be critical of the law all the same in determining what constitutes as enough to live on.

Then there is the amount that needs to be paid to get the economy growing again.
