It may seem like a general statement, but its true. Look at the worst neighborhoods, the cities that once flourished at one time. Many have something in common. And while the black community cant be solely blamed for each case, in most cases, they have been a part of the problem. Detroit, Birmingham, Chicago. Neighborhoods in nearly every state across the country

One black author has this to say:

And what about the tragic fact of a 25% poverty rate among black Americans? That's more than twice the 12% national poverty rate and more than triple the poverty rate among whites.

My critics are busy blaming racism for all this poverty. But that tactic is losing its punch because so many people of color, including black people from Africa and the Caribbean, arrive in this country and outperform native-born black people in educational achievement and income. And it is hard to make the old "racism is the whole problem" argument when the other 75% of black America is taking advantage of 50 years of new opportunities — since Brown vs. Board of Education and the Civil Rights Act — to create the largest black middle class in history, with unprecedented wealth and political power.

Black Journalist Spells Out Problems in Black Community

Still, I felt as if the whole panel, myself included, had gone too far in dismissing the "black culture" argument. In trying to make a point too quickly in a time-constrained public forum, we all allowed the howl of "No!" to completely override any serious engagement with the very real issue of black group culture, a problem calling out for a real discussion.

Such a discussion is in order because of the many troubling patterns of behavior in black communities, especially poor black communities that warrant close attention. It's the relatively low priority placed on education and mastery of standard English, the apparent virtue too many of our youth attach to gangsterism, a widespread embrace of thuggishness, embodied in the so-called "cool pose" and a smug sense of entitlement to the "good life," in place of an appreciation for hard work, sacrifice and the postponement of gratification for success.
The War Within

Do you agree? Are blacks their biggest enemy using racism as an excuse for underachievement?

These comments only make sense in this nation because too many of us still believe that race matters as a way to understand or explain human behavior.

If on some level you accept that racist notion which I think the vast majority of Americans do unfortunately, then it becomes self evidently true that black people are messed up, a people being destroyed by black racial problems, by some bizarre black mindset/attitude, etc that is separate and different from real Americans.

If on the other hand you reject the poisonous idea that race has anything to do with behavior, then you rightly see worse outcomes for black Americans as a problem of American society.

Yes their black, have very high profile jobs, and also have the same hard work ethics as you do.

Their are lazy ass white people too you know. What is their excuse. I get tired of this, because to dang many people stereo type black people, and it does **** me off.

My friends are sucessful, due to their own calling in life, which was work hard, and be the best person that they can be. They treat all people with respect, due to their upbringing. So are you saying that your black girlfriends, bust their butts too, but black men don't that is hogwash, sorry it is.

There are many black people who have the same ambitions and asperations of white people, what is your excuse for lazy white's mexican's and whoever fits in your category as being lazy.

Unless you live in a million dollar plus neighboorhood, my friends are really busting their ass way more then you. Because yes that is exactly where they live, one in Vegas one in Beverly Hills. So stop the nonesense, people always talk about those who are lazy, blah blah blah, but never those who are highly sucessful, why is that?
I think these are the ones we're to hate.......when does the left show success of the blacks, the only time I see it is close to election. Then they just tell us they're all poor.

Good post and very true.......... if you listen to progressives blacks have a hard time living in America. Some seem to be spelling AMERICA wrong....

It could (rightly) be framed as a cultural problem. In this case, it is a cultural problem more prominent in the black community.

Underachievement is evident in many communities. I spent a while in a poor white area, and whenever people succeeded from it (i.e. went to university, got a proper job) they were resented and rejected. They were told that they believed they were 'better' and were pushed out of the community

What were the economics in those cities before? I know in Detriot it was the departure of the car companies that gave blacks a chance to live the American Dream and once that left, then came despair. You do realize that good paying jobs are the real reason for the decline and the people that could not leave are the ones that are still there.....poor uneducated blacks.

Please what is culture? How can black Americans have a different culture than American culture? This is a fantasy projection.

I don't care about your personal experiences. I don't care about your time is a poor white area and what you claim to see.

You asked a very specific racist question, which I answered.

Race is irrelevant, it cannot explain human behavior, the problems of all American citizens are the problems of American society, not of racial groups.

These aren't special black problems caused by black people with our black minds and our black actions. There are only human problems. There are only American problems.

It is time we get off the bs race stuff.

Who said blacks had a different culture? I meant a culture of despair and hopelessness which is widespread in the community - and it has become a self-fulfilling prophecy .

I don't 'claim' to have seen what I saw. I know what I saw in the white community. And if you don't care about it, I'll still sleep well at night.

The US has got lot more unsympathetic to claims of racism keeping certain minorities down now that Obama was elected - and perhaps not without merit
