No excuse for what that man did. Like I said before. He should be in prison for assault and battery. I've been around loud and crying babies, and I never slapped any of them. Why should this man get a pass?
As a military family, I've flown often with kids. In fact, once I made a transatlantic flight (9 hours long) with FOUR kids under age 10 - and no husband with me. My kids behaved very well, including the 18 month old. However, he and the three year old did cry a bit at take off and landing when the pressure in their inner ears became painful. It was probably five minutes of crying each way.
They can't help it.
I agree that kids can be irritating on a flight if the parents don't keep them calm (I had 9 hours worth of entertainment in their backpacks, plus we flew at night so they fell asleep after a couple of hours - which was the plan). Parents really do need to be aware that they're in a very small space with their child and every noise or bounce that their child produces is likely to be magnified. I fly often, and have only had a couple of experiences with an irritating child in the cabin - and I usually feel sorrier for the parent than I do for myself because the parent is usually really struggling.
Mainly - it takes planning on the part of the parent, and graciousness on the part of other travelers.
This is similar to how I see it. The mother could have planned better. That being said, slapping a child(who is in pain) and then calling that child a very vile and ugly word is quite disturbing and ugly.
