I've read that the poorest 10% of Americans vote very little.
Why do you suppose that is?
It's possible that they're not as educated and aren't as inclined to read the papers. But the Democrats would win so much more if the poorest voted more.

According to some, the Democrats intentionally keep people poor and on public aid to garner votes.
And yet, turnout in many areas with a substantial base of welfare receipients generally do not have a good turnout in any election. Mileage varies.

About 51.9%, not very low...but certainly a lot less then the other side of the spectrum.

It is funny to see real numbers about poor people voting, and contrast that to all the propaganda from raving pundits about how Obama got all those poor voters out in droves to win him the election.

Why? Well if you work where you are barely making rent then you can't stand in line for hours to vote.

A lot of poor people think Republican because thy believe the crap fed to them by the local republican machine.

Goodbye to All That: Reflections of a GOP Operative Who Left the Cult

There are tens of millions of low-information voters who hardly know which party controls which branch of government, let alone which party is pursuing a particular legislative tactic. These voters' confusion over who did what allows them to form the conclusion that "they are all crooks," and that "government is no good," further leading them to think, "a plague on both your houses" and "the parties are like two kids in a school yard." This ill-informed public cynicism, in its turn, further intensifies the long-term decline in public trust in government that has been taking place since the early 1960s - a distrust that has been stoked by Republican rhetoric at every turn ("Government is the problem," declared Ronald Reagan in 1980).

Among the GOP base, there is constant harping about somebody else, some "other," who is deliberately, assiduously and with malice aforethought subverting the Good, the True and the Beautiful: Subversives. Commies. Socialists. Ragheads. Secular humanists. Blacks. ****. Feminazis. The list may change with the political needs of the moment, but they always seem to need a scapegoat to hate and fear.

Except when you factor in that 51% is 51% of 28% of the population.

Very true. I think that they feel like it's stacked against them no matter who is in office. They're not very smart either. They will say things like they "don't want to get picked for jury duty" if they register to vote. They don't see the Dems as a useful tool to maintain all of their "free stuff"- very stupid. the stupidest ones are the southern whites who are on SSI, medicaid that vote only for Republicans, who want to slash their aid.
