Why are you using incomplete statistical data to ask questions about POOR/UNEDUCATED black people and not upper and middleclass blacks who for the most part are invisible to the public?

It's a matter of self selection. Your average black american is far more intelligent than your average African black. It's just that only the cream of the crop in Africa are able to make it out of there and come to the US. In Europe where their African immigration policy is much less restrictive than ours you see quite a difference in the quality of African immigrant.

I am basing my account on a black South African friend's word. She said white. Due to my obviously American accent. Even though I am darker than she is.

I am on my phone, please forgive the typos.

Most African nations have tons of natural resources. Africa is the richest continent...and yet it is the poorest.

Look at Sierra Leon: more diamonds than Botswana and better land for agriculture, and yet the place is in shambles. Why? Because the British were brutal as hell when they ran it. Botswana was the least colonized part of Africa with the British only sending a few missionaries and making it a protectorate as opposed to a colony. They had no real interest in what they thought was just a desert...thank God they didn't find diamonds there until after the British left.

Uh; the Brits have been gone for what, 50 years now? Blaming the Brits for this and that in in Africa in 2013 don't cut it.

Voluntary immigrants of any background usually do better than locals as they like the host culture and want to impress locals, be accepted by them etc., which won't happen if one is perceived as a loser or slacker.

Voluntary immigrants these days usually means more or less the elite of the countries of origin. Most Africans would probably fail in the West if they were sent there against their will. I have seen a documentary on African refugees that were resettled in the US, they are kind of lost, outside society, missing their home, not knowing what they are supposed to do in the US with its totally different laws and habits.

If there are so many middle class Blacks, why do more than a 1/3 of Black children reside in poverty? Some of you are making it sound like poor Blacks are just a tiny part of the population.

Uh, yes it does. The British created a ripple effect that exists to this day.

Even Somali refugees outscore African Americans.

The results, although preliminary, were eye-opening:
• Only 36 percent of black students who speak English at home passed their grade's math test, while 47 percent of Somali-speaking students passed. Other black ethnic groups did even better, although still lower than the district average of 70 percent.
• In reading, 56 percent of black students who speak English passed, while 67 percent of Somali-speaking students passed. Again, other black ethnic groups did better, though still lower than the district average of 78 percent.
The numbers do have significant limitations, Teoh said. That's because they are based on home-language information that is entirely self-reported, and the data exclude English Language Learners — an optional program for students who score poorly on an English proficiency test.
Most of all, Teoh said, because the English-speaking category includes students of many black ethnic groups, it's impossible to compare specific ethnic groups.
At the recent community meeting, much of that distinction was lost on the parents in the audience.
"It's very alarming that students that were born right here are at the bottom of the barrel," said Vallerie Fisher, whose daughter is a senior at Rainier Beach. "How is that possible?"
So while I agree with your general point the data shows otherwise.
