I get off the planet quite often and - believe me - there ain't nuttin' out there to do. I mean, now and then, an asteroid or a Klingon (dude, they PARTY!!) - but not too often.
Factory farms need to be banned, pronto. There's absolutely no reason for this abomination on the planet - my grandparents had a dairy farm that I used to stay over at during summers as a kind, and beleive me, it was NOTHING like this at all. The cows were treated humanely, with loving care by my granddad, and they were able to live happy, contented lives out on the pasture.
It's just that we've allowed BigAg to take over the food industry with their immense factory farms, plus we've allowed illegal immigrants to come in and work in those hellish meat plants - just keeping the immigrants out would cause those meathouses to close, as no self-respecting American would ever work at one of those places, even at unionized wages of $35 an hour.
So for those of you who sing the praises of unfettered capitalism, this is what you get...

Agreed.
But they never will be. They have the best PR in the country. In NY we are all about being "farmer friendly" and passing bills to help ease the burden on poor farmers. What we don't realize is that these bills do nothing to help those we think of when we hear the word farmer. They help make business easier and cheaper for the factory farms.
Hm, well, yes - we all want our chicken to be cheap. We all want to be able to eat chicken every day. Or, really, any type of meat. These processing plants are no different for beef, pork, or fish.
We can not provide the supply of meat at such low prices by following non-industrial methods.
Sure, the idea of having mom and pop catch one chicken at a time is a nice illusion but it can not fulfill our needs. It's that simple.
The world population has risen dramatically:
In 1800, there were 978 million people on this planet!
In 1900, there were 1.65 billion.
In 1950, there were 2.5 billion.
In 1990, there were 5.3 billion.
In 2000, there were 6 billion.
Now we are at 7 billion.
Between 1800 and 1900, we added roughly 700 million people.
Between 1900 and 2000, we added roughly 5.4 BILLION people!
We all want food. We all want to be able to afford it.
