I don't know how the rest of you feel, but this crap is getting really old. It's not like these deadlines appear out of nowhere. Both sides are too busy pounding their chests like good little Party soldiers to actually run the country.

SPIN METER: In budget fight, sky is falling again

SPIN METER: In budget fight, sky is falling again | General Headlines | Comcast

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama and his officials are doing their best to drum up public concern over the shock wave of spending cuts that could strike the government in just days. So it's a good time to be alert for sky-is-falling hype.

The scare tactics are reprehensible. Why can't problems be solved without the decpetion and fear mongoring?

I know, those "scare tactics" only work on those people who will lose their job. They don't matter, right?

So by your logic we should just continue to go deeper into debt so people won't get fired ?
Or do you just want to tax the rich that much more to keep them employed ?

No, there should be targeted cuts in waste and programs that are obsolete or don't work. Not across the board cuts. Why the Repubs wanted this, I'll never know.

We are where we are because Congress has not acted.

8% and you'd think the world was going to come to a standstill.
Imagine if we have to have austerity measures down the road ?

This is so simple even I understand it. We can not continue to borrow 40% of what we spend for government.

There are four options:
1) Increase taxation by 1.2 trillion dollars (it looks more impressive if expressed as 1,200,000,000,000.00 )

2) Decrease spending by 1.2 trillion dollars.

3) A combination of the above.

4) Do nothing and double our debt in the next 12 years +/-

Any way you slice it the 1.2 trillion dollars is coming out of GDP since it is currently included in the government spending component of GDP. The problem is that it is pulled forward revenue in the form of borrowing.

If taxes are raised the money is pulled out of the economy. If spending is reduced the money is pulled out of the economy. If we do nothing then when we are FORCED to do something at some point in the future it will be a lot worse than if we cut now.

If the politicians do the right thing we are in for a depression. If they fail to do the right thing we are in for an economic disaster in the future. I would rather get it out of the way now myself.

It is getting old. Everything's a disaster until the last minute, at which point everyone votes for business as usual.

President Obama signed this into law. He also wanted this. And Jay Carney confirmed that the White House offered sequestration as a plan.

Stop the political talking points and recognize that both sides are to blame for this manufactured crisis.

By the way, the House is introducing a bill that would give President Obama and the White House the authority to make targeted cuts. The White House is rejecting this plan. I have mixed feelings about the bill myself because it cedes Congressional power to the White House. But at the same time, it's disingenuous for the President to run around the country and campaign against cuts to which he agreed.
