I like the self-sustaining concept, but I don't think it's logical to expect. Revenue is not a front-and-center concept in the NPS. For that to occur, a philisophical change would have to take place.
I'm not saying they can't raise admission prices, but on national historical places like that, money isn't something to pinch on to much. There are plenty of other wooded parks that can get by on much less.
I have no idea but the numbers stated are 5%. That isn't very much. I really care less how they cover the cuts. Cut none from one and 10% from another. I suppose everyone will be pushing for their local or favorite parks to not get cut.
Why would some of the camp grounds be closed? answer is : most likely there would be no staff. Solution, why don't one of our so called leaders call on the American people to have the JFK spirit. You know do not ask what the country can do for you but what can you do for the country. Would it be hard to find people to give 4 days out of a summer so others can enjoy the parks or camping?
Have any of you been following the CA State Parks scandal? They were crying for months that they had to raise admission due to a funding shortfall, when all the while they had MILLIONS in secret accounts.
Across the board cuts mean across the board cuts. I'm sure the national park service has some ham that could be trimmed of the fat. They probably waste money all across their bureaucratic layers like every other agency in the federal government. I'm tired of reading all these horror stories about how the world is ending because they have to actually make some spending cuts. It's all gloom and doom rhetoric.
ACcording to the memo 398 parks will have to implement a 5% cut. That is not the end of the world. Why did they wait until the 20th of february to even issue this memo? They've had a year plus to prepare for this and did nothing. The memo even states the NPS hasn't received a report from all parks yet so they don't even know what the cuts will eventually entail.
I think we should also think about the hundreds of Battlefield Parks like Gettysburg,Shiloh,Bunker Hill, etc. They all have their volunteer organizations that raise millions but without taxpayer support these places would fall by the wayside.
Taxpayer support isn't being removed. There will be a small cut.
Near where I grew up is one of the last houses Frank Lloyd Wright designed. It's one of the few that you can go and spend the night in. A person has to pay with fee's and all about $300 a night. A pretty steep price but the place sells out practically all year.
People will pay if they really want something bad enough.
It's $23 to simply walk through Fallingwater. $65 for a more in depth tour. Somehow enough people still go to keep these places to keep it self sustaining but once again, we are only talking a small cut here.

Sounds like you're in the DC area? If so, not exactly a good example of an area experiencing a major economic downturn. People have money to burn here....it's evident pretty much everywhere you go.

Is there one in the D.C. area also? I know there are three or four you can spend the night in but I was speaking about Penfield House in northern Ohio.
