The only people who care about poor people in the third world are mega-rich, One Percenter Hollywood celebrities who have the free time and oodles of money to afford to care about "starving nations".
But I think the majority of middle-class and working-class Americans think as I do- Charity Begins At Home! I would much rather help my fellow Americans because I can make a real difference here, not by texting my money to Africa where it will most likely end up in the wrong hands. One need only look at the charity catastrophe that happened after the Haiti earthquake-- that's the norm, not the exception.
I don't care if private citizens and corporations want to donate to third world countries to help the poor. I do have a problem when our government does. With the number of people who where middle class that has fallen into poverty, we have enough hungry, homeless people who should be taken care of.
Our government has spent billions of dollars "investing" in Afghanistan building up villages with people that were doing just fine living in the 18th century. I'm sure if the Afghani villagers had to crap in a hole for another 100 years it wouldn't bother them. It's all they know. But they are poor, ignorant people who need help.
I agree. When we interfere in foreign countries to "help" we're letting the despots off the hook.
Why do people care about the poor in the 3rd World? why do they care, or is this just a myth?
For Liberals, 3rd World people are just like trophies. They drag them out and wave them around for political purposes, and then when their done, they shove them back into the closet.
Liberals loved the 3rd World people when they were poor, but now that the 3rd World is developing, Liberals are all up in arms because jobs are going overseas and they can't compete against the 3rd World.
Kind of ironic.
Industrialization initially requires massive amounts of labor....so much labor that no country has ever had a choice...they've had to use children. So Liberals are all up in arms about child-labor in other countries, but it's really just a sham.....the reason Liberals want child-labor laws is to block development of the 3rd World.
Same with wages. Liberals scream "sweat shop" and they want to violate the Laws of Economics and force 3rd World workers to be paid more than what the labor market allows via Supply & Demand, in order to create Wage Inflation and destroy the economies of 3rd World States.
It's just hypocrisy and talking out of both sides of the neck.
Aren't there enough poor in our own countries to worry about, and even if not, then why worry about someone in a far flung region that has absolutely zero connection to our own lives?
Personally, I think it is an ego boost. There are many good causes, but some of them are more hip and cool to be involved in than others.
It's like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie make the news visiting poor people in Africa. You don't see them in some dirt poor town in Mississippi.
You get to think of yourself as a sophisticated and compassionate person to be concerned about the starving kids in India. But who really cares about the homeless man in Central Park? He's not exotic and cool. He's just a bum.

For some reason the US cares more about poor in other countries.
I grew up hearing about the starving kids in Africa.
Decades later....they are still starving over there.

I think people should first care about the poor in their communities and then after that reach out to the poor around the world.
