"CAN'T" is SUCH a convenient word, although it DOES apply to the President's pay, per the Constitution.
No, stopping the pay of Congress would not make much of a difference in the sequestration problem.
BUT, it would get their attention, which is the whole idea! Hit THEM in the pocketbook FIRST!
Actually everything I have read tells me that obama is lying (again) about what will happen if the sequestration happens! It will NOT (CAN not) effect Social Security payments. It will NOT (CAN not) effect military retirement payments. It will not (CAN not) effect military pay and allowances.
Nearly ALL of his doom and gloom predictions are LIES!

"Can't stop their pay. That would violate minimum wage and several other workplace laws."

OK, fine. Then cut them back to the Federal Minimum Wage, and limit them to 40 hours per week! If they want to form a Union and strike on us, that just might be the best thing that could happen!

This is no longer the Republican's war, it is OBAMA'S war now! He and his Demoncrap cronies can NOT pass the buck anymore about ANYTHING! It is ALL on his plate now! For the second time, HE IS the MMMFIC!
However, all of that has nothing to do with the current sequestration business, nor does it change the fact that if ANYBODY takes a financial hit, it should start at the top, with members of ALL parties.
Besides, they are nearly ALL millionaires if not multi-millionaires, they don't NEED those government paychecks! They CAN afford to lose their Federal salaries! Those of us on SS or DFAS pay can NOT afford to lose any of it!
OK, I know what HMFIC is...what the heck is MMMFIC?

You are all too correct. Those wars are the biuggest factor in he increase in our debt.
Interesting how they were kept off "the official books" though.

Government has failed the people at every level by both Cartels- I mean parties.

The Constitution is quite clear. You cannot change a Congress members pay while they are in office. They can only change it for futre Congresses.

It wouldn't do anything, most everyone in congress is independently very wealthy, and the government pay is just a little more pocket change on top of their cash mountains.

There are just NOT ENOUGH people that can threaten to vote out the incumbent .

Or enough replacement candidates that would likely be any different.

According to the Congressional Research Service, the total cost of the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other global war on terror operations after 9/11/2001 all the way through the end of 2011 (MORE than 2 years after Bush left office) was $1.283 trillion.
Quote:
With enactment of the sixth FY2011 Continuing Resolution through March 18, 2011, (H.J.Res.
48/P.L. 112-6) Congress has approved a total of $1.283 trillion for military operations, base security,
reconstruction, foreign aid, embassy costs, and veterans’ health care for the three operations initiated
since the 9/11 attacks: Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) Afghanistan and other counter terror
operations; Operation Noble Eagle (ONE), providing enhanced security at military bases; and
Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). This estimate assumes that the current CR level continues through the
rest of the year and that agencies allocate reductions proportionately.

Of this $1.283 trillion total, CRS estimates that Iraq will receive about $806 billion (63%), OEF $444
billion (35%) and enhanced base security about $29 billion (2%), with about $5 billion that CRS
cannot allocate (1/2%). About 94% of the funds are for DOD, 5% for foreign aid programs and
diplomatic operations, and 1% for medical care for veterans.

The Congressional Research Service also found that government spending on means-tested (requiring no/low-income for benefits) social welfare programs for just 2011 was $1.03 trillion.

8+ years for two wars and other war on terror operations: $1.283 trillion

Just 1 year of government spending on means-tested social welfare programs: $1.03 trillion

"Republicans also thought..."

One would think with age comes wisdom.

How many times do we have to remind some of you, that it WASN'T JUST the repubs.

The DEMS controlled the Senate. The Senate MAJORITY Leader, a DEM CO-SPONSORED the bill giving Bush authority.

We know by Harry Reid's action that if the SML does NOT want a bill to pass, HE CAN KILL IT.

Just about EVERY TOP NAME DEM voted FOR the bill. WITHOUT THEIR SUPPORT AND VOTES. the bill would never have passed.

To blame ONLY the repubs prove one of 1 things. Either you are a complete partisan or you are ignorant of the facts. I think you know the facts.

I enjoy watching RWNJs squirm and turn themselves into pretzels trying to shift the blame for Bush's middle east disasters.
