AN DIEGO - After a record one-month jump in gas prices, the state is set to consider a tax increase that will impact what drivers pay at the pump in gas taxes.
When it comes to fueling at the pump, Selena Zheng likes to shop around.
"It's a little hard and really demanding trying to pick out gas stations like, what's cheaper, what is not," she said.
While drivers can look at the gas prices on signs by the road, what they cannot see is the amount they will pay in taxes. That adds up to about 70 cents per gallon.
"It really adds up," said Zheng. "Taxes on sales, taxes on clothes, taxes on gas now, you know, so it's a little tough."
It may be about to get a little tougher. On Tuesday, the State Board of Equalization will consider a 3.5 cent increase on what is called the excise tax. It generates funds to maintain roads, bridges and infrastructure.
If the rate is hiked, California will lead the nation in having the highest gas taxes.

Legislators of all states look to increase revenues any which way they can, making it easy money for the coffers.
E.g., Illinois just last year increased cigarette taxes by $1.00 per pack, and said it was to fund medical payments the state must lay out.
IMO, state lotteries ended up being another scam. Originally, they said state lotteries were supposed to help schools and education. If that is or was the proposal, what happened? Teachers all over the state of Illinois have been going on strike or threatening to strike for more wages.
In Wisconsin where I reside, the legislators passed a 0.1% sales tax onto citizens in certain counties years ago to help pay for the new stadium for the Milwaukee Brewers. Never put onto a ballot, never a referendum to pass a new tax. It doesn't benefit me because I could care less about having a new stadium. I would rather have seen those increases spent rebuilding infrastructure.

But California has to pay for the MTBE cleanup that's stinking up the subsurface ground water (not well water, just the fact it is there, also MTBE is not really toxic and well metabolized compound like alcohol but it just tastes bitter as heck). Ah the days of methytertbutylether. Excellent motor fuel oxygenate made from petroleum, not corn. Too bad they forgot to line the underground tanks and stinky plumes are all across the state.

Brown in his former life as governor,actually was somewhat of a fiscal conservative. Cut some spending. Stood up to the bloated university system. Those days are long gone.
So instead of hitting hard working people, because in California people need cars to get to work, maybe Sacramento should actually STOP with their goofy spending projects? I see the wagon trains headed back now.
