The government doesn't need to know my race. And in fact, it's a very inaccurate set of data since races are not pure and the census mixes race with ethnic background.
Collecting this data just reinforces our differences.
Not all white folk are europeans and not all europeans are white folk...
Not all Asians have epicathal folds and not all peoples with e folds are asians
we could do this all day.
That is my point. When referring to race, white people are referred to by their race (white or caucasian), not their region of origin. You don't see "Northern European American" on any census forms do you? That would be frickin' stupid.
Well, it could be because the OP was referring to the "race" block on the census form. If we aren't talking about race and are talking about region of origin, it is perfectly reasonable to add African-American, European American, Asian American, etc. I have some black friends that emigrated here from Europe, they of course are European Americans, not African Americans. Same with Carribean Americans. I worked with some white people that came from South Africa, who are of course African Americans.
However, the question on the census, which the OP was referring to...is about race. Do try to keep up.

I don't know what you think you are talking about but this is what the Census bureau is interested in finding out.
The racial categories included in the census questionnaire generally reflect a social definition of race recognized in this country and not an attempt to define race biologically, anthropologically, or genetically. In addition, it is recognized that the categories of the race item include racial and national origin or sociocultural groups. People may choose to report more than one race to indicate their racial mixture, such as “American Indian” and “White.” People who identify their origin as Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish may be of any race.
So now a Negro isn't a Negro? Political correctness gone insane. Offensive? Good Lord everything is offensive today.
I know, right? It's just crazy.
They really ought to create a census form just for the Negro community. On that form, when they ask for the number of children in your household, it could simply ask for "gator bait."
It's about time we returned to the good old times. You know, the times before Negroes acted all uppity and thought they were entitled to feel "offended."
Gee, political correctness is truly crazy.
