Welfare recipients should be limited to a very small and select group of food. Obama and his administration are bigger crooks than the thieves on the street. When will this come to an end?

Well they picked the two poorest counties in the nation.
Hidalgo and Cameron are border counties with a high rate of poverty.
The population is young with large families.

Oh..and they are solid Dem counties as well so don't go bashing those right wing rednecks for living poor.
These are Hispanic Democrats, loyal to the party.

Well sure, if you give someone something for nothing they're going to take advantage. It's the GIMMIE MINE mindset today.

Damn right. If you get a coupon in the mail for a free Gillette razor or a bag of tortilla chips or some other random item, of course you're going to take it. Don't think for one second that you're not of the "gimme" mindset, because you are. We all are, it's human nature. It may not mean you want to take food stamps, but in a general context, it does mean you'll take free stuff on occasion just because you can.

Default Really?

This is too common a story to have any credibility. I put it down with all the other welfare legends.

If all you RWNJ think living on welfare and eating off food stamps is so great why don't you sell all of your assets, cash out your bank accounts, sell your new cars and move out of your classy neighborhoods and join the poor in their ghettos and enjoy the good life.

You are far too sensible to do that but you still believe being poor is so great because it makes you feel so superior. Get real you delusional fools. Being poor is a real PIA.

The $28 million in one county and $13 million in another county for food stamps reported in the article is very much like getting a coupon in the mail for a free razor or bag of chips, but I would interpret the reason for that as being slightly different from your point. The companies that provide those free coupons send them out in the hopes that people will try their product for free, and like the product so much that they will buy them the next time they want razors or chips.

It's called developing brand loyalty. It's a marketing strategy that works for Gillette and Hostess because if it didn't they wouldn't send out the coupons.

Brand loyalty gets developed for things like razors and chips, and it works for developing party affiliation as well. The difference is that one version of brand loyalty translates into higher sales for the company and the other form of brand loyalty translates into a guaranteed voting block.

Grocer gets 2.5-year sentence for $844,000 food stamp fraud - U.S. News

Quote:
Saleh, along with his wife, Fatima Saleh, 37, acquired more than $844,000 by paying customers approximately half the value in cash for goods purchased at other stores using their benefits.
They then re-sold the same items in their store at a substantially higher price.

If your view of taking something for nothing is correct, than don't you think the government needs to crack down? It seems to me, way too many are on foods stamps and the government is allowing this to happen. BTW your comparison is like oranges and apples> You give an example of getting a coupon which is an advertisement and designed to get you to try a product: if your theory is right the government is in the business to encourage you to try their product; free food!!!!

That doesn't even make sense. If being poor is "great" how would the non-poor person be feeling superior? Poor being great would mean the poor person should feel superior. Now if poor sucks then anyone above poor might feel superior.

Being a beneficiary in America can be a good deal for some people in just the right circumstances, who are smart enough to game the system. It can be good enough to give up a working class life in favor of that of a welfare/disability/food stamp beneficiary. The people I've talked to who have done this say they did have to sacrifice some things but the benefits made up for it. The big thing was switching from a better apartment to something less desirable but everything else stayed the same or improved and certainly not having to work and having that level of freedom was the driving force. They live in a worse neighborhood but when you are of the taker mentality that isn't a big deal and they spend their time and money at salons, malls, and hang out with other welfare recipients who live that particular lifestyle.

If you don't have a work ethic and are not particular about where you live and don't have a lot of class, the welfare lifestyle choice can work very well. People who don't have that mentality cannot understand but I've grown up with some people who do have it, and they don't mind giving up some things to get a load of freebies.
