In the modern US political scene, there doesn't seem to be much debate on whether or not the government should guide the economy, only to what degree and in what specific ways.
Is it the government's responsibility to create jobs or encourage certain industries? Would a more top-down approach be better with the right people in charge?

Yeah but we put the wrong people in charge anyway. So as the banks were bailed out that gave them enough to consolidate. Why do people think that the only central planning occurs through the official da guberment?
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Oracle CEO Larry Ellison envisions his recently acquired Hawaiian island becoming a "little laboratory" for experimenting with more environmentally sound ways to live.
Is that or is that not a central planner?
I just don't understand what conservatives keep talking about when they say they are against government? I define government by who owns the land. They define it by who you can vote in and out of office. If the land owners cannot be voted in or out that's not government to them. The only difference it seems to me is that they don't like democratic republics. Can one so called conservative even explain to me how freedom works in their minds?
The United States economy is too unregulated. Economies in other industrialized nations are regulated much more than ours is. This includes Europe, Canada and Austrailia, China and Japan. They would never allow big banks and corportations to get away with the bloody murder they get away with here.

No, and the reasons why are varied.
The main reason is that your leaders have the mental and moral capacity of a three year old.
Besides that they're not nearly competent enough to understand all the intricacies of an economy and how they relate to each other.
Those intricacies are actually quite simple but it takes and understanding of astrophysics, natural law, economics, and history. They're woefully inadequate in those categories.
