“Knives with blades that are 2.36 inches (6 centimeters) or shorter and less than a 1/2 inch wide will be permitted on U.S. airline flights as long as the blade is not fixed or does not lock into place. Razor blades and box cutters are still not permitted.

Two golf clubs, toy bats or other sports sticks — such as ski poles, hockey sticks, lacrosse sticks or pool cues — will also be allowed in carry-on luggage.”

TSA to allow pocketknives, some sports equipment | fox4kc.com

Also, from that article: “Although it was widely reported that the 9/11 hijackers used “boxcutters” in their attack, the weapons were not recovered, and investigators believe other types of knives were used.

At a January 2004 hearing of the 9/11 Commission, a commission staff member said, “Our best working hypothesis is that a number of the hijackers were carrying — permissible under the regulations in place at the time — permissible utility knives or pocket knives.”

The commission displayed a Leatherman knife, saying, “We know that at least two knives like this were actually purchased by the hijackers and have not been found in the belongings the hijackers left behind.””

I guess, why I am starting this thread, is because of the image of boxcutters as the primary weapon. The weapon that ultimately started the Afghanistan war. I just never remember anybody telling us that we are going to war in Afghanistan because hijackers took over our planes with Leatherman knives.

By the way; the blade on the classic Leatherman knife is 2.6 inches long. That would make this particular knife still prohibited on today's airplanes.

When I was young; I was allowed to carry up to a four inch blade in elementary school. I also carried my target .22 to HS when I shot on their rifle team. Times change!

Yet I still have to put my contact solution in a plastic bag and take off my shoes. Why do you need a pocket knife on a plane?

The fingernail clippers are the ones that really seem stupid. A very small blade (like describes above) will not enable a hijacker to take a plane any more. We have all seen when people go crazy or try to take a plane now - everyone kicks their *****. People have been conditioned to go down fighting rather than sit and be obedient (for the most part). I think the days of North American or Euro hijackings are just about over (although, never 100%). These knives will make no difference to anyone.

My local newspaper did a poll and only about 20% of us thought this was a good move by the TSA. Most people have been brain washed into screaming “The sky is falling” when in the proximity of the standard pocketknife. Of course nobody thinks about how deep a pencil or pen can penetrate. Perhaps, someday, we will only be allowed smart phones and notepads?

Why stop at objects. There are plenty of people that can kill with easy using only their bare hands or even just their feet. Should we now make people that are martial arts experts register with the government? Maybe make them fly with the hands and feet handcuffed.

Can we just ban the TSA from air travel? Would simplify a lot…

What has changed all of a sudden?

Normal items like fingernail clippers are forbidden, cosmetics are forbidden, an open bottle of soda is forbidden, but now you can take a knife. Doesn't anyone else think this is strange?

Let's see, this is America. Somebody high up in the government owns or has been lobbied by a knife company. They will make more money if they sell more knives. That's about the only thing that would make sense, based upon the way our government works. But that doesn't even make sense. Anyone?
