Same here. I graduated in '08. Made it in right before the bust.
I couldn't agree more with your sentiment.
It's really sickening to read how ignorant older Americans are about the world today.
These problems were created in the 1970's when Nixon closed the gold window ---
They were created in the 1980's when reagan deregulated Wall Street and started running deficits ---
They were created in the 1990's when we failed to reform healthcare, kept deregulating Wall Street---
They were created in the 2000's when we cut taxes, let the Fed run wild, and the deficit went out of control, and the banking system melted down and we began to pump money into it.
And yet, somehow, ALL of this is gets blamed on a cohort of kids, most of whom who weren't even able to VOTE until the 2004 or 2008 elections. This is some of the most blatantly dishonest and ignorant shifting-of-blame that I've ever seen.
You are almost there. There is nothing that says a starting job should be one that provides you with an income to buy a house and raise a family.
It is also your choice where you decide to do this. If you pick a high cost of living place like the earlier example Arlington, that is a choice you made.
I make sacrifices to live in a low cost of living area. There isn't the entertainment available that there is in other areas. I have to drive 3 hours if I want to go to a MLB game. The idea that you should be able to have it all, all the time, especially when you are first starting out has never worked.
You see it...the town I'm staying in now offers starting wage nighttime nursing positions for $27/hr, in a place where you can buy a house for $80,000. It's all about choices.
The GenY group thinks they have an entitlement to start at the top, and that they don't have to work their way up. I have to say, though, I work with many in this group who are entrepreneurs and they're doing fine. Salares were wrongly inflated for 6/7 years. Now's also a good time to buy real estate, but many Gen Y folks are foolishly paying rents equal to double or triple a mortgage payment. Because they want a party life. Yes, there are exceptions. But any whining from this group gets no sympathy from me.
I see. So fatherless young people who just saw a housing crash and people who thought they we securing their future lose everything, should now use their vast real estate speculation experience and enter the the market. Surely they will get the best rares with their 800 credit score even with no credit history at all. Surely now is the best time especially with all the other ripe advice that they should move where the jobs are.
But right, no generation before ever wanted a party life. Woodstock was a jobs fair don't ya know.
Interesting too how - Salares were wrongly inflated -, but not - rents equal to double or triple a mortgage payment-
If that is a problem (and it is) you have to start voting for those who are willing to address it. As long as you continue to vote for those that promote a further expansion, you really can't complain if you get what you voted for.
There's nobody to vote for.
Pro-geed Romney or Clueluess Obama
Maybe we should lower the age required to be president.
But that brings up another point, who's in charge of our politics?
So it's MY fault personally that the 1994 law changed
No, but it is your fault if you keep on voting for those that further it.
Quote:
First -- how, exactly, do you claim to know who I voted for?
Second -- regardless of who I voted for, what does this have to do with the 1994 law?
Third -- If you knew that UE was calculated differently in 1980 and 2013, then WHY did you ignore that when making your argument?
My statement about voting is more a general statement. Do you disagree that many young people voted for someone that has supported policies that favor Wall Street over Main street? I say this acknowledging that this describes both major candidates.
For the sake of argument let's say unemployment is higher today. That doesn't take into consideration that inflation was double digit and interest rates were incredibly high. So you can't point to one aspect and say, well, there you go. It's so much worse today.
We all live in the same world, holmes. Maybe like a typical child you should speak less and listen more.
That's an amusing comment to post in lieu of a rebuttal.
"Speak less and listen more"
You mean listen to the old folks screw everything up, completely butcher history, and make themselves out to be some sort of heroic figures fighting against socialism?
These people do NOT live in the same world as the rest of us.

This whole discussion is based on the supposition that we "boomers" ruined life for a whole generation. Have you Gen Yer's ever for one moment stopped to think that when we were your age, we had about as much control as you do now. When we were in our 20's... we did the exact same things you are doing and with the same results. We didn't control what government did back then either? That those older told US what to do. Even the smallest things like how to raise you. I wasn't the one who thought you should get a trophy for participation. I grew up old-school. Only the winner got the trophy. But those in control at the time said no.... everyone should. You blame us for your lot in life, yet I would bet that most of us on here were good parents. We did what we had to do, what the "experts" told us to do for you, so that you would grow up happy and healthy. We loved you. We wanted the best for you. We didn't want you to struggle. We grew up in an age where we were told... go to college... you'll succeed. So we passed that knowledge along to you, in hopes that you would not have to go through what we did. There's not one parent (at least a decent one) who wishes to see their child hurt.
Instead of being hateful and full of blame, maybe, just maybe you should be thankful that your parents and a whole generation did what they could for you, even if it wasn't the way it should be done. Maybe you should take a little bit of constructive criticism, and take the parts that did work, join them together and do better. Maybe you can be the ones to change the world for the better. But there's no way that will happen until you get this big giant chip off your shoulders.
That's an amusing comment to post in lieu of a rebuttal.
