Do you have a similar issue with stores being told that they have to keep those magazines out of the sight-lines of children?
Actually those magazines used to be behind the counter with jackets over the cover.
I imagine they were behind the counter because any kid could pull off the cover.
They weren't hidden at all..I remember seeing Playboy and Penthouse behind the counter at the newsstand and candy store same place as the cigarettes.
Kids survived just fine back then. What's the problem with kids today that government needs to step up to the plate and worry about their future habits ?
And those magazines are old school now...there's the internet with LIVE people and all you have to do is click on "Yes, I'm 18"..imagine that ?
I have no problem with it either. It is not as if they are outlawing their sale. If it means that one less young person doesn't start smoking all the better.
I imagine that many of the same people who rail against this would raise holy h*ll if their precious darlings got a look at some of the magazines sold by the same establishments.
And, yet...
Anyway, science may back up the Mayor on this issue:
"The allure is so strong even 31 percent of smokers readily admitted that removing cigarettes from store displays would make it much easier to quit."
And it would make it much easier for fat people to lose weight if we closed fast food restaurants and kept the candy, donuts, chips and ice cream behind the counter and out of sight. Let's make it illegal to advertise junk food too.
And we need to close casinos because those addicted to gambling will be tempted to gamble.
And we need to close bars because alcoholics will be tempted to drink.
Maybe they should just turn the whole city into a health spa and call it a day?
They don't address that anymore. Before it was all due to smoking and they got laws passed because of it. I doubt anyone will revisit and take a second look and doubt even more they will reverse any laws they passed based on the ASSumption that smoking near kids made them get asthma.
There's plenty of chemicals in your food/water/air but they went after smoking.
Huh?
I KNOW that second-hand smoke exacerbates asthma. Beyond any shadow of any doubt.
Public nudity is illegal, selling and smoking cigarettes is not.
No?
"In 1991, Congress passed the Synar law, which prohibits the sale of tobacco products to minors under the age of 18. This law also forces state governments to monitor the sale of tobacco to minors. In response to the Synar law, many state governments passed legislation that bans minors from buying or possessing tobacco."
Eventually the legislatures will grow a few pairs and completely ban cigarettes.
That day can't come too soon.
You realize that the addictive qualities of nicotine have been compared to cocaine and heroin? A ban on cigarettes is going to make the drug related crime you see now look like a walk in the park when you have 60 million people trying to purchase a drug that is now illegal.

BTW, a carton of cigs costs about $12 in St Martin as compared to $200 in NYC. It would be well worth your time to take a trip there and bring back a suitcase load.
Yeah, that's illegal. Trust me, I've looked into it.

A ban on cigarettes...
I do. Note that I didn't say to make tobacco illegal.
Just the manufactured, advertised, adulterated industrial product: cigarettes.
All natural state agricultural products should be legal by default.
That doesn't mean we need to make it easy or attractive by way of advertising.
