In recent ratings Maddow has beaten Hannity in the 25-54 demographic, so apparently she's scoring points with viewers whose gray matter allows them to see beyond hairstyle and footwear.

Yes, I do that frequently. Regarding the so-called "assault weapons" ban, I told them they had to ask themselves one question: "IF the ban as written had been in effect, would it have prevented ANY of the shootings that have occurred?" IF the answer is "NO", they must not vote for the bill.
Of course, it goes without saying that they MUST vote the way their constituents want, if they wish to get re-elected. It would seem they are aware of that! I understand they said they would not/could not vote for the bill!
