When it comes to excesses of wealth and privilege, our corporate elite refuse to yield place to anyone. The orgiastic nobles of Catherine the Great's Russia, the mindless consumption of Ancien Regime Versailles, the oriental splendor of an Ottoman Sultan's court, are as nothing to the wastrel luxury of our masters.

And the latest candidates for the Marie Antoinette Prize for Criminally Stupid Entitlement: the leadership of J. C. Penny, a company whose sales have fallen 25% and whose stock has dropped 18% so far this year.

At least nine of these princelings fly in to corporate HQ in someplace called Plano, TX; the CEO arrives four out of five days at a cost of $40,000 round-trip, while the rest jet to work from their homes in pleasant coastal parts of the country, such as California, New York and Boston.

If there were justice in this world, these men would indeed be raised above the earth - to the height of the typical lamppost.

It's up to the shareholders of J.C. Penny to put a stop to this. If the company is paying for this expense the owners (shareholders) should decide if this is a cost that is acceptable for the company. Tax wise, the company nor the executives should be receiving any tax breaks for the travel to and from work. If they are able to write off ANY of the expense then YES- there are problems. Unless you allow "joe sixpack" to write off the drive to work you shouldn't allow the expense of flying these executives to their job at J.C. Penny.

So are you going to stop shopping at JC Penney? I'm not.

In case you haven't noticed, our elected officials do the same.

I can't remember the last time I bought anything at JC Penney - some time in the 90s, probably. But if I did shop there, and decided to stop, with sales declining by a quarter, apparently I'd be in good company.

At least these guys are paying for it out of corporate profits, not taxpayer money. President Obama travels by Airforce One at $180,000 per hour. And he and Michelle travel separately, so double that. Our senators and representatives do the same.

Default What do you care, if it's their money?

It's not your money so why do you care ?

Now, YOUR money is being spent to keep empty buildings in shape to the tune of $25 billion per year.
Now why aren't you as upset over that ?

The President is our Head of State, the Leader of the Free World, etc., etc., etc.

And he's paid rather less than Ron Johnson, whose salary in 2011 came to 53.6 million dollars, or 134 times Mr. Obama's pay packet.
