Since we've been a secular nation from our very inception, and secular nations don't reference religious texts when making laws, it was never on the table.
The United States is still dominantly a Christian nation, and the Bible and its values are not disgusting to most Americans. As for same-sex marriage, the truth is not that an overwhelming majority support it, but that the majority of Americans consider it none of their business whom you choose to marry. As long as it's two adults, able to consent and consenting, then it is the business of the two adults, and no one else's. That's where the public opinion has shifted.
I think you all are confused about in what way America was a Christian nation. Our government has always been secular, as established by the Constitution. Culture on the other-hand was still very Christo-centric or Judeo-Christian if you prefer that term. Culture today has completely changed and is no longer in harmony with the Bible or mainstream Christianity. The American government is a reflection of its people. The government that once reflected a Christian America now reflects a post-Christian one, and Republicans are not adapting or accepting the change well.
Religious freedom means exactly as follows: you, as an American, are free to follow your religion FOR YOURSELF. You are NOT free to push/force others to follow yours, or to judge others who don't follow yours. If your interpretation of the Bible says that to be gay is a sin (not everyone's does), then, fine, don't be gay (hope you weren't BORN gay if that's what you believe, though). But you do NOT get to judge others who disagree with you (most Christians think that's God's job, anyway).
Does anyone ever protest the Muslim faith? They must agree with gay marriage.
