After pondering the whole discrimination and judging issue for a while, I have come to the conclusion that people will judge a person much more by the way they speak than any other factor. I think the way a person talks is much more heavily judged than what a person wears or what they look like.
I think people judge speech in this order:
1. their syntax (grammar)
2. their diction (word choice)
3. their accent/understandability

Thoughts?
I just ask them if they are Republican or Democrat. If they say yes to either one, then I discriminate against that person and don't want to associate with them due to woefully ignorance and lack of intellect.
I speak well. i write poorly. I BS-ed my way through life.
I judge others on how neat their home is. a messy house, is a messy mind. A clean house, is a boring person. Just the right clutter, is a perfect human being.
Most people would tolerate a different race, a different sexual orientation, a slob, a different religion,...
....but they'd find the most difficulty with someone of a different economic level.
A predominantly white, upper middle class neighborhood would welcome Barack Obama's family before it would welcome white trash.

You think so? Tell me this. Would it raise more eyebrows for a wealthy man to marry an overweight, unattractive woman in his own economic class or a thin, beautiful poor woman?
I think that is a big consideration. If someone used a lot of slang or cussed up a storm, I wouldn't give them access. But we don't always talk to everyone we see. We judge even what we see in passing. Someone who is dressed like a slob and doesn't care about their appearance will more than likely turn out to be someone I couldn't tolerate for long. Kinda like the poster who said they judge people by how they keep their homes.
I think people are mostly judged based on appearance. Appearance is key to be honest. In a formal or non-formal setting.
I think the way people speak comes in a close second. There is a time and a place for everything, using slang may be acceptable with family, but not meeting with someone, say for instance, the President.
I agree that appearances are the first thing we judge, but I would claim that if a person saw AND talked to a person, the conversation (even a very short one) would be more judged than the appearance because I think a conversation is more telling of a person than is their appearance.
Appearance is most important.
How would you know how someone speaks if you wouldn't talk to them because of how they look in the first place?
