I mean, let's say that you work for a business or a government agency that covers same sex partners with health benefits.

You have a friend who isn't covered.

How do you prove that you're gay?

What should the penalty be for lying?

Please stay on topic....I know that there are some heterosexual people who have marriages of convenience....my question is how would you prove that you're gay?

Some companies require a notarized document of domestic partnership, or a state issued civil union.
But being gay is not a requirement. There is no gay test. Some companies recognize hetero civil unions and domestic partnerships too. How do they prove that they are heterosexual?

How do you prove that you're straight?

Since when have people needed to prove that they like to sleep with a certain gender? We don't require that of male/female couples, so why would the standard be any different for male/male or female/female?

The penalty for lying of course would be termination. Other then that it would just be trust. I can not even recall any job I ever had asking for proof that I was married when I added my spouse to benefits.

Why would gay people have to "prove" anything any more than straight people have to "prove" they're straight? I don't get this question.

You're in a civil union, partnership or marriage as a gay person and fill out the exact same paperwork straight people do when they file for their benefits. It's not like they need different forms. A marriage and civil union and partnership are the same thing for straights as gays.

The same way I had to prove to somebody that I was heterosexual before the government and my employer would recognize the contract I have with my wife.

You shouldn't have to prove anything. It shouldn't matter. Do straight couples marry for financial and other reasons? With no actual relationship?

Yep, so it shouldn't matter for gay couples
