But, the possiblity of the North Korean regime collapsing is scary for the whole region--and China and South Korea don't really want to deal with risking their current economic growth with dealing with millions of starving North Korean refugees. That's the real fear for North Korea.
Yes, the last thing China wants is a nuclear war on its doorstep. But I do think the Chinese should step up, in one way or another, and take responsibility for the human catastrophe its tacit support of the Kims has helped to create. You broke it, you bought it.
He is just trying to scare South Korea into giving him free shyte. When communism runs its own people to the ground, then they look for others to exploit.
While Bush, Clinton, or Obama could certainly kick the Nork's butt and crush their military, we couldn't bring their country up from the stone age - nor would we be able to rebuild South Korea from the rubble.
No that won't happen. North Korea's economy is a centrally planned system (centered around the government). With GDP per capita of less than $2,000, North Korea remains as one of the world's poorest and least developed countries, in sharp contrast to its neighbor South Korea, which has one of the largest economies in Asia. There have been some minor efforts toward relaxing central control of the economy in the 1980s that involve enterprises but no go.
The people are brainwashed and every waking moment centers around the Kim family and must have the "dear leaders" picture on their walls so they can thank him every day. It is actually cult like. He is dictator is ruling the country and has isolated it from the rest of the world. He controls all TV, internet, radio, etc. Nobody is allowed to leave the country or come in, so the people inside really don't know about the outside world at all.
However, just because they are poor, it doesn't mean that they can't fight a war.
Not quite true. There are some "free trade zones" set up near the border with South Korea and along the coast, so South Korean companies can take advantage of cheap North Korean slave labor. I saw on the news last night that those zones are operating as normal, which may be a signal that Li'l Kim's posturing is much ado about nothing.

Ok, thank you for the correction.
