It's clear to me now that this board is infested with people who hate workers, hate the fact that some people work for a wage and think those that work for a small salary are either losers, moochers or both.
Now, what is wrong with the idea of 'earning a crust'?
It's like a 3rd world mentality, whereby low paid workers are considered a joke.
I thought work was supposed to be good.
So what is going on here?
I don't understand this post. Is this some type of pro union thread? or just a swipe at the Repubs?
FYI, I'm Libertarian/Conservative, I work for a living, and I happen to like all the people I WORK with. So I guess I don't fall into this 'hate workers' persona.
I've also never worked in a Union (they are basically non-existant here) so I guess I don't know what I'm missing. But I can tell you what I'm NOT missing...paying out union dues.
They also subject workers to standards to which they do not subject CEOs and highest management, namely proving their value to company and the"skills" they possess. For example, I will now ask them to explain the value and "skills" the CEO of Target or Walmart possesses that are hundreds of times greater than that of not only ordinary peons within the company, but store managers. What exactly do these CEOs do that equates to compensation at such a far, far higher level? What skills that are apparently so, so specialized and hard to attain, do these people possess that justifies salaries of such exorbitant amounts? In anticipation of the "responsibility" argument, let me stay with this current example and note that even department managers in these stores are responsible for areas that generate millions of dollars for the corporation over which the department managers have authority, yet these managers are compensated at only a tiny fraction of the sales and gross profits generated under their direct supervision. No, you'll have to rise to the moment and offer something more intelligent than that.
I'm basically libertarian, which I assume makes me right wing.... And I believe that I'm far more on the side of the worker than anyone on the left side politically. In fact, I think leftists always create a system that disparages low-skill workers...
Moreover, the minimum wage has no historical basis for actually improving the lives of the people of the country. Only 4% of American workers even make minimum wage right now, and almost all of them are people who are very young and who have no skills.
Actually there are more workers over the age of 25 years making minimum wage than there are are workers between the ages of 16 and 24, especially women over age 25.
You do have a point here. I can hardly recall when the republican party was the initiator of wanting a wage increase for American workers. I think or believe democrats have always pushed for minimum wage increases, and republicans have historically been against wage increases.
Yet it is the left who is pushing for amnesty for millions of illegals to be able to remain here and retaiin American jobs or continue to compete for them. I guess they just hate American workers. Foreign ones...ok I guess.
Our country has come to value investment over labor, and the shrinking of the middle class reflects this. There's this mentality that ANYONE can become the next Bill Gates, David Koch, Warren Buffet, or Mark Zuckerberg if they just really work really hard and apply themselves. This of course, ignores the history of what built this country.
This is an interesting observation in that this is exactly the motivation for outsourcing of jobs etc.
Corporatists would prefer a slave labor system if they could get away with it. Either that or a totally automated work force which is likely to happen some day.
Conversely, unionists would prefer that all of the money generated by a company go into the hands of the workers and that the company "exist" basically for the benefit of the workers..........investors be damned.
For the past 30 or so years the corporatists have been winning this battle evidenced by skyrocketing profits and CEO pay vs. average working wage. They have also managed to villify the unions even though they have managed to pretty much have their way in this battle over that period of time.

Don't you live in a 3rd World country? Why are you so concerned about what, we in America think? I am not sure where you get your ideas, but I don't think many people look down on those who are willing to work for a living, regardless what kind of work they do. Many do question those who think they deserve the same standard of living regardless of their life choices...
Business Class Republican hate workers because the workers demand to be paid for their time and skills instead of settling for a bit of food and shelter. These unreasonable demands reduce the profit available first to management and any left over for the investors. Workers are just annoying and expensive. Immigration, legal or not, must continue to keep the prices down. Managers need every dollar they can steal to keep up with the Joneses.
