One of the provisions of the bill seems to be a religious test on who can hold public office. It was reported that a total of 9 Republican lawmakers are supporting this measure.

Although it is commonly understood that the Constitution of the United States forbids the establishment of an official state religion, the sponsors of this legislation appear to be arguing that does not apply to the states ... in other words, the federal government cannot establish an official religion but that North Carolina as a free and sovereign state may do so. The sponsors of this law are all Christian and white.

What are your thoughts?

The US constitution does not apply here. Most states had official religions when the country was founded. That is how they got everyone to agree to it.

According to another report in NBC News, a local professor at Catawba College was quoted as saying in The Salisbury Post, Michael Bitzer, this based on a "discredited legal theory that the states can declare themselves exempt from Federal law."

I don't supposed you'd considering popping over to the Connecticut gun regulation thread and mentioning this to the whiners who are wringing their hands because we're "violating" the Constitution with our STATE regulations ...

Have you ever heard of the Supremacy Clause of the constitution? What do they (or did they) teach you guys in school? The constitution and international treaties take precedence over state laws, and judges are bound to follow that order. It's what makes us Americans vs. a bunch of individual states.

Supremacy Clause - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Article IV, Clause 2 of the Constitution: This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the constitution or laws of any state to the contrary notwithstanding.

Just because they dont have them, doesnt mean they arent legal.

You are perfectly able to create a buggy whip factory, or produce Twinkies, the fact that they dont, doesnt mean its illegal
