Excellent article by the Center for Public Integrity, if nothing else comes out of this debate they need to strengthen the ATF and remove many of the roadblocks.

Quote:
Conspicuously absent from the president’s agenda, however, is much of anything that might address the stunning and widespread weaknesses that have for years crippled the federal agency responsible for enforcing the nation’s gun laws — the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Yes, the president announced his nomination of a full-time director for the long-leaderless agency —widely known as ATF — and some of the new proposals do tacitly acknowledge a number of the agency’s long-standing challenges. But the initiatives are modest, and Congress may not go along with any of them. So for now, the bureau remains systematically hobbled by purposeful restrictions, flimsy laws, impotent leadership and paltry budgets. And it’s not at all clear there’s anything on the horizon that would change that situation.

Maybe they should be rethinking how they spend their budget to prioritize the most important tasks like confiscating toy guns.

The criminal outfit known as the ATF should have been disbanded after its waco and ruby ridge screw ups.
And then there is the whole illicit gun running thing.
The last thing it needs is more taxpayer money.

Sure we need to empower these guys who have had one debacle after another. In the 1990's there were proposals to merge the ATF and FBI, and the FBI said no thanks. The quote from one FBI agent at the time was that when you mix dirty water with clean water, the dirty water does not get clean, but the clean water does get dirty. Considering the history of the FBI, that's like having Shaq kick you off the team because your free-throw shooting sucks.

Actually, we should eliminate the ATF.

Correct!

The entire organization should be dissolved.

Well that would solve the problem with regulation, there wouldn't be any. Congress is doing a pretty good job of making sure they are unable to do their job bewteen cuts to staffing and regulations. If you read through the article it's no surprise why there are so many illegal guns.
