This is a non-copyrighted map patched together from public information and a Wikipedia blank outline:

This is the entire reported murder rate, not just firearm homicides. I don't think we can actually draw many correlations between gun laws and the overall murder rate from this, except to note that states with loose gun laws are not necessarily doing well in the murder rankings, and states with more restrictions are not necessarily doing well, either. There seem to be other factors at work here.

Also, congrats to Canada for having the lowest national murder rate of any independent nation in all of the Americas, from Tierra del Fuego to the ice cap.

Yes, the State murder rate is highly influenced by demographics. Blacks and Hispanics having higher murder rates. That has to be accounted for before drawing conclusions.

I would expect if you broke the State rates down by race, you would see that liberal/more gun law states whites, less violent than red state/lax gun law state whites, blacks in liberal/more gun law states less violent than blacks in red/lax gun law states. Same for hispanics, asians, etc.

It's highly likely. Red states are poorer, broken down by race, less educated broken down by race.

With that going against you, crime would almost certainly follow the same pattern.

It's embarrassing for you I'm sure.

Most white States

Maine
Vermont
New Hampshire
West Virginia
Iowa
North Dakota
Wyoming
Idaho
Montana
Kentucky

Lowest Murder Rate States

Maine 2.0 1.8 2.0 2.4 1.6 1.7 1.4 1.4 1.2 1.1 1.4 1.2 2.2 2 2 2
Utah 1.9 1.9 1.4 1.4 2.2 1.8 2.3 1.9 2.5 2 3 1.9 2.1 3.1 2.4 3.2
Iowa 1.5 1.2 1.3 2.5 1.2 1.8 1.3 1.6 1.6 1.5 1.7 1.6 1.5 1.9 1.8 1.9
Minnesota 1.4 1.8 1.4 2.1 2.2 2.4 2.2 2.2 2.5 2.2 2.4 3.1 2.8 2.6 2.8 3.6
Rhode Island 1.3 2.8 3.0 2.8 1.8 2.6 3.2 2.4 2.3 3.8 3.7 4.3 3.6 2.4 2.5 2.5
Vermont 1.3 1.1 1.3 2.7 1.9 1.9 1.3 2.6 2.3 2.1 1.1 1.5 2.9 2.6 1.5 1.9
New Hampshire 1.3 1.0 0.8 1 1.1 1 1.4 1.4 1.4 0.9 1.4 1.8 1.5 1.5 1.4 1.7
Hawaii 1.2 1.8 1.8 1.9 1.7 1.6 1.9 2.6 1.7 1.9 2.6 2.9 3.7 2 4 3.4

So what states out perform here? The Red State of Utah. (Mormons) They have a good share of non whites and they have a low murder rate. Then you have the not so white, liberal states of Hawaii, Rhode Island, Minnesota all making the low murder rate top ten.

All 5, Red States on the most white top ten list, didn't make the top ten lowest murder rate list.

Just more evidence. Liberal states are less violent than Red States, accounting for race.

Can we conclude from the map that Republican states have a higher murder rate?

Are you saying that the states that let the government do the stealing for them with high taxes do not have to steal and kill on their own?
