It is amusing to read US papers saying what a great conservative Thatcher was.
She did not dump the NHS in favour of US type Insurance based health care.
Nor did she even try to dump the monarchy.
Which was a pity because voters in Britain would have dumped her like a shot.
So how many of you believe she was a conservative by US standards ?

No, not in US standards. She said a single payer system must be the foundation for any health care arrangement, and any one who says that in US is labeled a communist/marxist/socialist.

Nobody in a foreign country is a conservative by US standards. An American conservative is in a "special" class all its own.

Oh no, not by US standards! They sing her praises but she, in no way, would fit into their fold.

Dumping the monarchy is not a conservative position, by any means.

I was a little puzzled by that myself, but I think NZ is referring to the small-r republicanism which is the official doctrine of all American political parties. In other words, how could Thatcher be considered a conservative in America if she didn't cleave to American ideas, first and foremost republicanism.

But maybe that's not right - have to wait for him to clarify.

True, republicans in the USA have no time at all for Monarchies nor for that matter single payer health care.

Thatcher said quote, socialism would destroy the UK.
Since she was PM for eleven years why did she not dump the NHS which was destroying the UK with it's socialistic ideals or was she afraid of being dumped by the UK so called Conservatives ?
