They probably could not, because she refused to wear a wig. I don't see anywhere in this story, where she was offered another position. At least until her hair grew out.
As far as wigs being expensive, i know you can go on ebay, or i offer, or amazon, and get a pretty darn nice wig, for much less expensive price, then in an actual wig shop.
I feel very sorry for what this women went thru, after having an ex going thru brain surgery, was a very emotional stressful, unsure time.
But i also understand Hooters and where they are coming from, face it, no good looking girls, no hooters.
I would love a wig, my hair is so long and so thick, i would love to just put it in a wig, but my hair would not fit in a wig, that is another thing, my hair as other women is long and wavy, and thick, and some women cannot wear a wig.
The article said she borrowed one and tried to wear it. Apparently - and I can totally believe this - the wig aggravated her scar. There are a lot of cheaper wigs out there, but they have an uncomfortable lining that I doubt would work on a tender fresh scar.
I have a large head for a woman, PLUS thick hair. Wigs are exceedingly uncomfortable for me. I can't even buy women's hats in most stores, as they compress too much and give me headaches.

I believe that a wig aggravated her scar and her scalp. I cannot even put hot rollers in my hair, without them bothering my scalp, they make me nuts. But i still have to do it. Why oh why can't i cut my hair. As you get older in my fifties, hair is not suppose to grow grow grow. Mine does, and drives me nuts.
A couple years ago, i tried putting all my thick wavy hair in a short wig. It was hilarious, my hair stuck out of thr wig, even with cap did not fit in the stupid thing.
And made my head itchy as hek. So stuck with my own. As far as ebay, they do not sell just cheap wigs, there are many wig specialists who sell their wigs on ebay. They have all quality wigs, some i even see in wig stores online on ebay.
Your right on a tender fresh scar, the wig, would also aggravate the scar and also the scalp.

I helped a (now former) friend put her knee-length hair into a wig without issue numerous times. It didn't look lumpy nor was it uncomfortable. Just saying.

Most definitely believable. I wear wigs for a lot of conventions, any sort of scratch or bruise in the wrong spot makes for a most uncomfortable wearing.
Which reminds me, I get to wear one of my most uncomfortable wigs (extremely back heavy due to its styling) this weekend for the Matsuri in DC this weekend.

I've never had an issue with hair sticking out of a wig. With longer hair, braiding helps.

I order all of my wigs from various eBay stores (depending upon I'm looking for), Arda, Epic, and sometimes I'll try my luck with Taobao.

Remember, most wigs on ebay are cheap halloween type wigs, which are uncomfortable to wear and often times of poor quality. There are some great high quality wigs on ebay for cheap, but the often come from China, and take weeks to arrive when ordered.
Most times, cancer patients spend a good amount of money on their wigs, because they are higher quality or made from human hair. A good quality wig (synthetic) can run $40 - $100 depending on style/length. Human hair wigs, for even a short one, can run $200 starting .
I often wear wigs for many of the costumes I wear, and have put my various lengths of hair (floor length at one time) even into a very short wig (bob style). It's not impossible. Braiding, bobby pins and a Wig cap helps immensely.
Wow. This is probably the most disgusting thread I've read here in a while.
If...IF...I ever set foot in a Hooters and the waitress bringing me my food had a buzz cut and surgical scar, I'd tip her EXTRA for not being a wuss and continuing to work.
While it's sad, Hooters girls are hired to be "camera ready" waitresses. They have body standards that the girls must uphold and that includes hair. I used to work with someone who was a Hooters girl on Friday and Saturday nights. If you have dyed hair and come in with visible undyed roots, you can be sent home. Have to take steroidal medication and gain weight? You can be fired.
It's like any body-based job position (models, call girls, etc). If you don't meet their beauty standards, you don't have a job.
In case no one mentioned it yet, the law also requires employers to make 'reasonable accommodations' for an employee's disability. Without seeing the court papers, nobody here knows if Hooters did that.
Do the Hooters people actually believe that the public is so cold and cruel that they would reject a waitress recovering from cancer? I believe that they underestimate the goodness of the public. People are kind in general....Do Hooters really feel that some jerk is going to complain that the woman with the boobs and booty displays the braveness of a survivor? The Hooters marketing people should milk this thing instead of turning it into something negative. To keep her on would be good for business.
