I think we were a better nation back then.

I think it was better because that grandstanding fool wasn't on TV and constantly bragging about how HE's changed government policies.

It's a foolish argument. It was a different country. Some better and some not.

We were better back then.

Children played outside and in the streets.

People didn't lock doors.

Mothers stayed home to care for their kids instead of farming them out to daycare centers. Babysitters were for rare events out.

Meals were eaten as a family.

School was for learning, not indoctrination.

When parents disciplined their kids, the kids didn't talk back or ignore them.

And so forth.................

It was for certain groups; the rules were simpler and everybody knew you needed to follow the rules. So if you were the average white middle class family who agreed with society's written and unwritten rules, life was great. Unfortunately, there were whole groups of people for whom the norms of the times made life very difficult, uncomfortable, or even untenable. Change was needed, but what I think we are beginning to see is the pendulum swinging too far to the "for the good of the individual" side over the "for the good of society" side. It will swing back, it's just a matter of when. I hope it is soon, but I'm not holding my breath.

In a few ways yes and in most others (racial discrimination, suburbanization, conformity) no. I'd think the 1920s is better.

Exactly. Things were much better back then. This is not the same country today. It is sad actually.

As some have said already: There are /some/ aspects of the 50s that were better than now.

However, I'd take what we have now over the 50's any day.
