I think people who feel the need to carry a weapon at all times are gutless cowards, that buy into a arms race approach of how every day life should be.

Without reading the article in depth and taking what you say at face value all I can say is that a person has a right to defend themselves in their own home. Have lived in NC (7 years). They don't screw around down there when it comes to protecting themselves..
Wouldn't that make things worse? A typical road rage incident or work place disagreement, could get a whole lot worse.
Actually, it wouldn't. Concealed carry permit holders are held to a higher standard because they are armed. I could never ask someone to "step outside" to settle a disagreement even if I did not plan on using my weapon. If it escalated beyond fists and I used my weapon I am still not protected because I was the first escalation of the incident.
A couple of years ago I was in a minor traffic mishap and we pulled over to exchange information. There was a small mark on my bumper. The woman the put it there with her truck called me every name in the book, threatened me with lawsuits by her attorney son-in-law and even insulted the origin of my car (Japan). My wife had to sit in the car shaking and in tears. I kept proper manners by including "please", "thank you" and "yes ma'am" as often as possible. That is one of the many burdens I carry along with what is on my hip. The next weekend, I buffed the mark out with some rubbing compound.
This is ironic. The victim of the home invasion, who was shot in the hip, fled to his neighbour's house for help. The neighbour happens to be a police officer. The police officer not only did not grab his gun to help his neighbour, but wouldn't even open his door to him, and called 911 instead.
