Bottom line to me is the major chains, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Long's, CVS etc. shouldn't even allow this to be an issue in any of their stores. If an independent doesn't want to fill a perscription they consider objectionable that is fine with me, and he can market himself as a "Christian" pharmacy.

If the pope tells people to do harm to others, or makes any other political statement, the catholic church should lose its tax standing. That's pretty simple.
I totally agree, I think this was brought up with reference to another incident where a pharmacist actually did refuse to dispense.
I think its compeletly shameful and disgusting.
Has the day really come when I have to grill my doctor and pharmacist about their religion in order to know if I am getting all the information and treatment I should be able to get by law?

Are we as a society really supposed to allow a celebate man in a foreign country determine who gets birth control and the morning after pill? The reality is these things are legal in the US, the fact that the Pope wants to inject himself into these things is just more evidence of the arrogance of the office.

He should be paying more attention to who his priests are molesting AND doing something to make up to the 1000s of childrens lives they have destroyed.
First off, the Pope has every right to express moral and religious doctrine for the Church. The Pope also has every right to express moral guidelines for the faithful. And, he has done so in this case.

Also keep in mind that he was speaking to pharmacists worldwide - not only in the United States.

Ultimately, it is up to the individual - the individual pharmacist to make the decision.

But based upon discussions in other threads, it would also be up to their empolyers. The pharmacists could always find employment elsewhere if they disagree with employer sentiment, or become self employed.

I'm aware of a couple of pharmacies (including one "big box" store) where a Pharmacist objected - and inasmuch as there were two Pharmacists on duty, they made the accomodation.

Well frankly I don't think this can be tolerated. I for one would make a HUGE stink should I ever run into this kind of nonsense. I hope that American employers will not tolerate this kind of BS.

Life is full of BS. And some of it turns out not to be BS, after all.

You are suggesting that someone is not allowed to have personal moral beliefs?

As another, related example, I know a number of physicans (ob/gyn) and nurses who will not participate in any abortions - do you also consider them wrong?

Several major chains, such as Walgreen's, WalMart, Target, and Winn-Dixie, have or have had policies that permit a refusal to fill valid prescriptions on religious grounds. It might be noted, btw, that the Pope's comments last October referred to ANY drug that may have the effect of preventing the implantation of a fertilized ovum. Plain old birth control pills have this effect...
