This novel takes place in Johanesburg, South Africa but when reading it you can't help thinking Chicago, Wash. DC or any of the east coast cities in this country. It is a brilliant book, the major themes being fear and the institutionalized racial opression that was present in South Africa in the 1940s. Are you saying the same situation exists in Chicago and DC in present day? I'm failing to see the correlation.

My daughter's job requires that she flies back and forth to Africa. She hasn't been to South Africa or Johanesburg yet, but to neighboring countries.
