We've recently had some horrific crashes here in the Seattle area involving repeat DUI offenders, so there is a push for new legislation.
A state rep named Roger Goodman (D Kirkland) has an interesting new approach. He proposes that anyone convicted of 3 or more DUIs be banned from buying alcohol for 10 years. Enforcement would be effected by creating a special, distinctive driver's license for people with 3 DUI's. This would also mean that clerks and bartenders would have to check ID for every customer, every time.
I heard Rep. Goodman interviewed last night. He said that the approach of taking away their driver's license or car keys doesn't work, because the offenders end up ignoring the law and driving anyway. He also said that a similar system is already in place in Alaska.
What is your opinion on this approach?
Good idea. I'd support a lifetime ban after one DUI.

The drunk (four DUIs) from whom I previously rented would just have his girlfriend buy for him.
Instead of banning alcohol sales for these people, I'm wondering why the heck they aren't in jail. There are some people with multiple DUIs who still drive (illegally of course). If this occurred in Europe, they'd be under the jail.

It's dumb. They should be locked away at a rehab facility (not prison or jail, but a real rehab place).
