I know what you mean. The cruel streak is very present. Although they are often very intelligent and charming, I think the Irish and Scots-Irish are both unusually prone to irrational hatreds. That is why they are so easily manipulated into scapegoating. For instance, the Scots-Irish helped us win the Revolutionary War (we hate the English!), launch the Civil War (we hate the Yankees!!!), form the KKK (we hate kikes, koons, and katholics!!!) win the World Wars (we hate the Germans!!!), and they now form the heart of the Tea Party (we hate liberals! and the government!!!). The Irish formed the mobs, the Molly Maguires, etc. (we hate capitalists!!!). They are like the Arabs of N. Europe and America. Intelligent, but emotional and often violent. Easily agitated and stubborn as mules.
All this said, they are good to have on your side. You'll never have a better friend, if you don't **** 'em off.
Well, they are talked about. Irish Catholic gangs have faded into the middle class, probably through class mobility and intermarriage.
But what is the Tea Party other than a Scots-Irish gang that has the country by the ballz, and is bullying the rest of us into giving them what they want?
LOL, well said. You analyzed history pretty well although most Scots-Irish are actually descendants of English and Scottish that originally colonized Ireland.
Anyway, "The Westies" was a great read about a well known Irish gang I thought.
One of the reasons Irish gangs aren't talked about is the Irish have a knack for not drawing any attention haha. Jewish gangs aren't talked about often either.
Yep, why else do you think he is such a good speaker? Irish can be mean, for sure, and they can be worked up into us vs them thinking too easily, but they are also often damn charismatic and compelling. A very large share of our Presidents and policians have been Irish, Scottish, or Scots-Irish (slightly different, true, but not much), Andrew Jackson, Kennedy, Ronny Reagan, Billy Bob Clinton, Tip O'Neill, Smokin Joe Biden, and a whole bunch more.

Boston has a large Irish population, which is why I fear what will come out of these attacks.

That book was crazy...those guys were so violent and wild that the Mafia just decided to cut a deal with them rather than try muscle in on their territory. Surprised they didn't make a movie about that book, though I suppose the film State of Grace was sort of based on that era.

Scots-Irish is way different. Andrew Jackson was not Irish.
