No. The school wants a special exemption from the law.
Actually, the school isn't seeking an exemption from what could be argued an invasive and UNCONSTITUTIONAL law, but IT IS she that is wanting a special exemption for her lies and deception and full well knowing what she was doing. She should be charged with fraud when you come right down to it.

There is no law in Ohio that protects gays in the workplace. City of Columbus has one but it can't really be enforced.
This lady obtained employment under false pretenses. It's clearly within the right of the school to fire her. You can't lie to an employer and expect to keep a job.
Her school is also one of the best academically in the state. (And much cheaper than public schools). She'll have no problem getting another job.
The Bona Fide Occupational Qualification Defense (BFOQ)
Even under the statutes, there are certain situations in which “religion, sex, or national origin is a bona fide occupational qualification reasonably necessary to the normal operation of that particular business or enterprise.” 42 U.S.C.A. 2000e-2(e). This is called a bona fide occupational qualification (BFOQ). An employer accused of discrimination may therefore raise the defense that there is a justification for discriminating against the complainant. The employer then has the burden of proving what justification exists for their discriminatory behavior. Note: there is no BFOQ defense available when the discrimination is based on race.
Being a role model is an integral part of being a teacher.
She will not win if she sues because of this: Being a role model is an integral part of being a teacher.
But it had no effect on her doing her job for 19 years.
Generally to use those grounds there has to be a reason. "because of her religion, she couldn't handle pork in a bacon processing plant" etc.

She had been doing the job for 19 years.
It wasn't known, much like when it becomes known that a teacher was a former porn actress, the school system has to deal with the potenial fallout of that becoming public knowledge. Look, I personally don't care if a teacher is gay, I could care less as long as they are good at their job. But I am not the Catholic Church, who has religious beliefs that say homosexuality is a sin. I feel bad for the woman, but I understand the Catholic church's position. I think they were legally justified in firing her given their mission.

If it wasn't known, and had no effect on her teaching abilities, it is of no concern as far as being able to do the job.
Employment qualities or attributes of a prospective or current employee that an employer is allowed to consider under law for the purpose of hiring or retention. The qualifications may include gender, age and national origin, if those characteristics are considered essential to the job requirements. In order to prove that the qualifications are necessary, the company must show that they are critical to the success of the activities to be carried out by that individual. Also called bona fide occupational requirements.

It is once it's known. As a teacher in a Catholic school, she is supposed to be a role model for Catholic living. Her lifestyle is not considered compatible with Catholic beliefs, so she can no longer be that role model that her job requires.
