Way back in the 60's we had the hippy era, then various other social movements, seemingly ending in 90's consumerism and violation of social values.

Can this be re-initiated?

In my day there existed the Convoy (hippy/New Age travellers) and free party music scene (Rave/Techno culture) - bashed by Thatcher and her right wing hard hat supporters.

What will it be next?

You should be asking this in the Portland subsection of the Oregon forum.

I think it already is going on, in the form of people wanting to be in control of their own food. Genetically Modified Foods are taking over, and there is a huge movement by people who ant our food supply to be in the hands of the people, NOT huge corporations. Green energy, sustainable fuels, the ability to feed ALL the people are well within our reach, but are not allowed because of The Powers That Be, that control the $$$. Greed is stopping our species from evolving, plain & simple.

The hippy movement of the 60's and early 70's was the result of a specific set of economical and social conditions. I don't think we will have the exact same juxtaposition of those conditions again, so the possibility of there being another hippy movement would seem pretty slim.

On the other hand, the organic movement of today, as pointed out by KsStorm, is a sort of pseudo-hippy movement.

I don't know about a hippy revolution, but history shows government only listened when people took to the streets. So I'm not hopeful. People today are so goddamned arrogant and lazy, to wit: big ball posters on this forum and others.

What will be, will be what we want for our lives. Practice locally, but think globally.

We cannot change the world, we can only change ourselves. As my friend says: "Be the change you want to see." Or, as Buddha taught: "Hatred never ceases by hatred, but by love alone is healed." These people want to see a kinder, gentler world. What do you want?

The organic movement is small. And it will be undone to some degree when the paranoia and perceived superiority of organic food is debunked. Already some who were strongly opposed to GMOs have changed their mind and see how GMOs can improve people's lives.

The techno/rave group is just a group of lazy bored kids. They had no convictions or sense of activism like the 60s hippy movement.

The Hippy era and movement is dead. There is no sane individuals calling for American youth to tune out and turn on.

The era was puctuated by drug doing and screwing-brains to the wall. Roaming miscreants living an illusion... is not great ad for living in reality.
