People rarely leave a live round in the chamber, for safety reasons. Thus, requiring the pump shotgun to be cycled before a round enters the chamber ready to fire. Furthermore, you are advertising to the intruder that you are armed with a pump shotgun. Just the sound of a cycling round from a pump shotgun would cause most rational intruders to flee.

Why not keep a round in the chamber and ready? Every home defense gun I have staged is in condition 1.

If I had to put a round in the chamber, it would be done well before I turned off my home alarm. Assuming it were quiet, I'd rather have them thinking "Was that click the safety on a shotgun or a rifle?"

If they haven't fled at the sound of the alarm or from me switching all the lights on (which I can do from my bedroom) then they are not 'rational'. So hearing me load my gun is not going to make much of a difference.
