This state has serious problems, but I don't blame only the Republicans or only the Democrats. Both are to blame. Both played a significant part.
It's not a Texas problem.
The DHS waits for fertilizer companies to send them a form that asks the DHS to regulate them.
DHS is FedGov.
So this plant had enough fertilizer materials to flatten a 6 block radius, register 2.1 or 2.4 on the richter scale and DHS didn't know they exist. Yet..I bought a 50lb bag of fertilizer and had to hand over my DL so my info could be entered in some computer program.
Vehicle operators are regulated. Vehicular accidents happen that take out lives every year.
Oh, I see! This is regulated, that isn't regulated and doesn't need to be (because we right wingnuts say so), so all is at peace in the world. Yeaaaaaah. I think I'm getting it.
If all these reports are true then it is partly the companies fault for ignoring the law and partly the governments fault for not enforcing the law.
The company will be punished with lawsuits, fines, maybe jail for some.
The government will play the victim and claim they need more money and people. Because they only spend 4 trillion a year and employ millions of people. It's just not enough.
The company loses in these cases (and they should if they are at fault) and the DHS gets rewarded for government failures.
So, tell me again who has incentive to cut corners???
Self-regulation is what Republicans want, and one can see why. If they don't have to be held accountable for their actions and behavior, they can continue to perpetuate bigotry, discrimination, and the preservation of the "good ol boy" network. Without regulation, they can cut corners in order to maximize profit, even if the product is inferior or more dangerous to produce. Absolutely shameful and backwards.
Like the largest oil spill in the Gulf, this fertilizer blast has the stamp of the Republican way written all over it. Damn shame and lives were lost.
It's clear folks! Republicans are this nation's biggest problem. Their existence is detrimental to the health, safety, and welfare of the nation. This explosion is the latest example. Another unregulated Republican-controlled mess.

How do republicans have anything to do with a company that broke the law and how does breaking the law = unregulated?

I am sure this is a lack of staffing to carry out meaningful inspections, not only DHS but the OSHA, EPA. OSHA has 2000 inspectors, how are they supposed to do a credible job, they had not inspected the plant in almost 30 years. This is a result of deregulation that was the focus of the Reagan years and progressed through every administration, regulation was holding down our productivity and was viewed as the answer to our economy. I recall the "Love Canal" catching on fire back in the 70's before anyone saw the need for environmental oversight, maybe the West Plant will bring some attention to the issue.

Bingo. Our government has turned into a reactive set of agencies even when it comes to terrorism.
Housing, finance, insurance, food, pollution, etc.
They set it all up and then it goes on auto-pilot until something happens.
And when cuts happen the first to go are the worker bees that do the jobs.
