I don't live in Florida. What were the reasons 13 years ago that still apply today ?
Are there a lot of drug related gun crimes in Florida ?
I doubt retired folks are gunning each other down.
If the reasons have not changed, then what does it matter what the reasons are? If there were 691 killings, then there were 691 reasons. Drug related killings are down since the cocaine wars have ended.
The story is an example of a senseless killing, and a lot of killings are senseless. I believe in people's right to lawful self defence, but when everyone has a gun, there is going to be a lot of senseless killings like this one.
So that's the reason..senseless homicides ?
In Texas the number is up, not as high as Florida and that's been traced to increased gang activity.
In TX, FL and a number of other states you are allowed to shoot if someone is stealing your jetski. You are also allowed to shoot if someone is raping your gf/wife/daughter.
I don't think so, but we shall see. They are still investigsting it, but I didn't say you are "not allowed", I said it is not a good enough reason. Stopping someone from raping your family member certainly qualifies as self defence, or defence of another person, and is a much better reason for taking a life than a someone stealing your toy.

Homicides started going up significantly around 2005. What changed?

It may not be moral, but it is part of the stand your ground law if I'm not mistaken. A guy in Houston went out of his way and shot 2 illegal immigrants that just burglarized his neighbor's house. He ended up being charged, but the grand jury no-billed the case.
That figure simply states the number of firearm offences jumped starting around 2005, which is pretty much what the OP article is saying. The question is why. The article suggests it is happening because there are so many more guns out there, but is that a correct assumption? I do not know. I'll say it again, that I was surprised to see it.

What's that thing about causation and correllation?

No, stand your ground law is strictly about self defence situations, while in this case it was a property crime. The thief didn't even know someone was watching him. Yes, I heard about the Houston case. Like I said the teen shooter might get away with it, because the thief was on their property, but then again, the fact that he shot him in the back might change things.
